Study Under Faculty with Nursing Experience
Faculty in the School of Nursing bring experience from a range of clinical and academic settings. Their backgrounds may include patient care, healthcare leadership, education, and research. This perspective can help shape courses that reflect how nursing is practiced in today’s healthcare environments.
In an online nursing school setting, faculty guide discussions, case studies, and assignments that are grounded in real-world scenarios. You may examine how clinical decisions are made, how care teams function, and how ethical questions are addressed in patient care. This approach can help connect theory to practice in a meaningful way.
Faculty may also incorporate current topics such as healthcare technology, data-informed care, and evolving standards within the profession. As nursing continues to adapt to new tools and systems, coursework can include opportunities to explore these changes in a structured environment.
Throughout nursing programs online, faculty serve as academic mentors who provide feedback and support as students move through their coursework. Whether in foundational or advanced study, this guidance can help you reflect on your goals and better understand the responsibilities that come with roles in nursing.
What Can I Do with an Online Nursing Degree?
A nursing degree can open the door to a wide range of roles within healthcare. As you explore this field, you may be drawn to direct patient care, where you can study how to assess patient needs, support treatment plans, and work alongside healthcare teams in clinical settings. You may also consider environments such as hospitals, clinics, schools, or community health organizations, depending on your interests and level of education.
At the same time, your nursing degree does not have to lead in only 1 direction. You may choose to explore leadership, education, or administrative roles as your experience grows. Some paths may also include non-bedside opportunities that focus on coordination, policy, or patient advocacy. As you move through your program, you can study different areas of nursing and reflect on how your strengths and goals align with the many ways nurses contribute to healthcare.
I want to work directly with patients
A Bachelor of Science in Nursing can help you begin exploring direct care roles and the responsibilities that come with them. If you are already licensed, an RN to BSN may help you continue building your clinical knowledge.
I want to advance into leadership roles
A Master of Science in Nursing with a leadership specialization can help you study management, policy, and team coordination. This path may be useful if you are considering roles that involve guiding teams or shaping care delivery.
I want to teach or mentor future nurses
A Master of Science in Nursing with a nurse educator specialization can help you study teaching methods, curriculum development, and evaluation practices. This path may connect to roles in academic or training settings.
I want to specialize in a focused area of care
Graduate-level nursing programs can help you explore specializations that align with your interests, such as leadership or education tracks. A Master of Science in Nursing or Doctor of Nursing Practice can provide opportunities to study advanced concepts in your chosen area.
I want to grow into advanced practice or doctoral study
A Doctor of Nursing Practice can help you study advanced practice concepts, leadership, and applied research. This path may be the next step after completing a graduate nursing degree.

Common Questions About Nursing Degrees Online
Can you become a nurse completely online?
No, you cannot become a nurse completely online. While online nursing programs allow you to complete most of your coursework remotely, you will still need to complete in-person clinical training and hands-on experiences as part of your program. These components are required so you can study how care is delivered in real healthcare settings.
In many cases, you can complete these in-person requirements within your local community, so you typically do not need to travel to Lynchburg, Va., for campus-based experiences. Some nursing programs may include on-campus intensives, and those requirements will be outlined in your Degree Completion Plan (DCP). Aside from those specific intensives, most clinicals, labs, or practicums can often be arranged near where you live, helping you stay connected to your local area while completing your degree.
Are there any 100% online nursing programs?
No, fully online nursing programs without any in-person components are uncommon. You can complete many academic courses through an online nursing school, but clinical and lab work are typically required in person. This structure helps you apply what you study in real-world environments.
Are online nursing degrees legitimate?
Yes, online nursing degrees can be legitimate when they come from accredited institutions. As long as you attend an accredited university/program, you can be confident that your online nursing degree will hold weight as an educational credential.
If you’re seeking an accredited online nursing program, we have just what you need. The baccalaureate degree program in nursing, master’s degree program in nursing, Doctor of Nursing Practice program, and the postgraduate APRN certificate program at Liberty University School of Nursing are accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (http://www.ccneaccreditation.org).
Additionally, Liberty University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC). We’re committed to cultivating academic excellence, so you can get the credentials you need to pursue your dream job.
How do online nursing programs work?
Online nursing programs combine virtual coursework with practical requirements. You can study topics like healthcare systems and patient care online, while completing clinical hours in approved settings. This approach can help you balance your studies with other responsibilities.
Can Liberty’s online nursing school help me earn a nursing license?
Some of Liberty’s online nursing programs are specially designed to help you pursue licensure or certification for your nursing career. Be sure to check the licensure/certification requirements for your state to determine whether the degree you’re interested in is the best fit for you.
What is the difference between BSN, MSN, and DNP degrees?
The difference is based on level and focus. A Bachelor of Science in Nursing can help you study foundational nursing practice, a Master of Science in Nursing can help you explore advanced topics or specializations, and a Doctor of Nursing Practice can help you study leadership or advanced practice roles. Each level builds on the one before it.
