Grant Eligibility
Grants are a form of financial aid that you do not need to repay. Many grants are based on financial need, and some also take into consideration academic performance, academic degree program, and/or residence status.
You will need to complete your FAFSA annually to be evaluated for federal grant eligibility.
There may be additional eligibility requirements for grants. Review each grant below to review all requirements and determine if you may qualify.
Federal Pell Grant
Amount per year:
- 2025-2026: TBD
- 2024-2025: $740 – $7,395
Eligibility:
- Complete the FAFSA
- Undergraduate student
- U.S. Citizen or Eligible Non-Citizen
- Prorated based on enrollment
- Other criteria apply, subject to change
Year-Round Pell and Summer Pell: Up to an additional 50% of Pell Grant aid may be available to students who use their entire Pell Grant for the aid year, known as ‘Year-Round Pell’. To receive Year-Round Pell, students must enroll at least half-time in the eligible term and meet all other eligibility requirements in the semester of the additional award.
Summer Pell Grants, which are different from Year-Round Pell, may be available to students who did not use their entire Pell Grant in the Fall and Spring terms.
Students planning to enroll in the Summer who received Pell in Fall and/or Spring who may have questions about the Pell Grant are encouraged to reach out to us at https://www.liberty.edu/student-financial-services/contact-us/.
Students transferring to Liberty may be able to receive additional Pell Grants sooner than the summer term. Please email FinancialAid@liberty.edu for more information.
Pell Lifetime Eligibility Used (LEU): Some students may be affected by the Lifetime Eligibility Used (LEU) requirements for the Federal Pell Grant. Students who are close to or who have met his or her limit do not need to send any documentation unless it is requested in ASIST. Read more about the Pell Grant Lifetime Eligibility. Track your lifetime usage by logging into the National Student Loan Data System.
The U.S. Department of Education is sending notifications to students who may be eligible for restored Pell Grant eligibility due to school closure. If you believe you may be eligible for restored Pell and have not received a notification, please reach out to the U.S. Department of Education at (800) 557-7394.
Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG)
2024-2025 Amount per year:
- Resident: up to $900
- Online: up to $700
Eligibility:
- Complete the FAFSA
- Undergraduate student
- Must be eligible for Federal Pell Grant
- Need-based: Student Aid Index (SAI) = 0
- Enrolled at least half-time
- Funds are limited to early FAFSA applicants
- Other criteria apply, subject to change
Federal TEACH Grant
Amount per year:
- Up to $4,000
Eligibility:
- Complete the FAFSA
- Undergraduate or graduate student
- Enrolled in TEACH Grant eligible major
- Maintain at least a 3.25 cumulative grade point average
- Prorated based on enrollment
- Must fulfill post-graduation teaching requirements or this grant becomes a Federal Direct Unsubsidized Student loan

Liberty Supplemental Grant
Amount per year:
- SAI: -1500 to 1000: $1,500
- SAI: 1001 to 2500: $1,000
- SAI: 2501 to 6000: $500
Eligibility:
- Complete the FAFSA
- Residential undergraduate student
- Must be enrolled full-time
- Need-based, meaning amount is determined by the Student Aid Index (SAI) on the FAFSA.
- Must borrow full Subsidized Federal Direct Student Loan
- Other criteria apply, subject to change
Liberty Scholars Grant Program (Undergraduate)
Amount per year:
- SAI: -1500 to 1000: $2,200
- SAI: 1001 to 2500: $1,700
- SAI: 2501 to 6000: $1,200
Eligibility:
- Liberty Scholars Grant can be offered in addition to the Liberty Supplemental Grant (see above)
- New Resident undergraduate, full-time, consecutively enrolled, degree-seeking students
- For students beginning first-time enrollment on or after Fall 2017 semester
- Must maintain Financial Aid Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) while enrolled at Liberty
- Must have a qualifying federally calculated 9 month SAI in the entry year. Future year grant amounts are based on first-year amount.
- Must be eligible for and offered the Liberty Academic Scholarship
- Must apply for financial aid through the FAFSA and complete verification (as applicable) each year
Maximum Pell Grant Eligibility for Dependents of Certain Deceased Servicemembers and Public Safety Officers
Amount per year:
- The maximum Federal Pell Grant amount for the applicable award year
Eligibility:
The FAFSA Simplification Act changed eligibility for what were formerly called, “Iraq and Afghanistan Service Grants (IASG)” and “Children of Fallen Heroes (CFH) Scholarships.” Beginning with the 2024-25 award year, students who meet the eligibility requirements for Pell Grants under the Special Rule in HEA Section 401(c) will receive a maximum Pell Grant award, regardless of their calculated SAI. To receive a Federal Pell Grant based on eligibility under the Special Rule, a student must be:
- The child of a parent or guardian who died in the line of duty while either (a) serving on active duty as a member of the U.S. Armed Forces on or after September 11, 2001; or (b) actively serving as and performing the duties of a public safety officer*; and
- Less than 33 years old as of the January 1 prior to the award year for which the applicant is applying (e.g., for the 2024–25 award year, a student must be less than 33 years old as of January 1, 2024, to be eligible).
* A public safety officer generally includes the following:
- Law enforcement officer
- Firefighter
- Member of a rescue squad or ambulance crew
- Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) employee
- Emergency management or civil defense agency employee
- Chaplain
- Others defined in Section 1204 of the Omnibus Crime Control and Safe Streets Act of 1968

Two Year College Transfer Grant
Amount per year:
- Up to $1,000 for standard grant amount
- Up to an additional $1,000 for certain majors
Eligibility:
- Complete the FAFSA
- Undergraduate in-state student (first time entering freshman no earlier than fall 2007)
- Must be a Virginia-domiciled resident
- Must not have moved to Virginia for purposes of attending post-secondary school
- Need-based: Returning students must have an SAI of $8,000 or less. Students who became eligible for the first time in Fall 2012 are granted the maximum SAI of $9,000. Students who became eligible for the first time in Fall 2013 are granted the maximum SAI of $12,000.

Virginia Tuition Assistance Grant (VTAG)
Amount per year:
- 2024-2025
- Residential Undergraduate: $5,125
- Residential Graduate: $5,000
- Online Undergraduate: $2,560
- Online Graduate: $2,560
- Grandfathered Undergraduate: up to $3,400
- Grandfathered Graduate: up to $1,700
Eligibility:

- Must be a Virginia domiciled resident
- Must not have moved to Virginia for purposes of attending post-secondary school
- Students who have previously received VTAG do not need to submit a new application unless changing programs from undergraduate to graduate, or if they have broken enrollment.
