It takes a lot of people and a lot of facilities to make the healthcare industry possible. Patients receive direct care in places like hospitals, physicians’ offices, and nursing homes. But that’s not all. Pharmaceutical companies develop and distribute drugs used to care for patients. Key research needed to better understand the human body, disease, and medicine is done in research facilities all over the world. And there are also health insurance companies and government agencies involved in the industry. All of these facilities need strong managers to keep them running. This is where healthcare management comes in.
Those in healthcare management do just that – manage healthcare facilities. These professionals need industry knowledge, an eye for detail, and a business mindset. They may run a specific department or the entire facility. They have to keep track of the facility’s finances, laws and regulations, work schedules, and service records. They plan the services of the facility and strategize and implement improvements in how the facility is run. There are so many positions open to a healthcare manager. But no matter what, a healthcare manager is the visionary, coordinator, and driver behind the facility.
Are you trying to figure out if you should get an online MBA in health administration or in healthcare management? There is a lot of confusion around the difference between these, and you may be wondering what the difference is and which is right for you.
In healthcare management, you will focus on the business side of healthcare. You will need to understand finance, operations, and decision-making. You will plan and organize the operations of the facility to maximize efficiency. Healthcare management at its core is about business operations at a broad level.
Healthcare administration, on the other hand, focuses specifically on staffing. To succeed in administration, you will need to understand the services your facility offers so that you can make strong hiring decisions. You will then plan and organize how to effectively use your staff. Healthcare administration focuses on the day-to-day operations with the staff.
The question of which is better depends on your skills and your desires. Both roles are critical to the success of a healthcare facility. Both have a strong career outlook. For this reason, one is not better than the other – but one may fit your goals better. And that means you’ll want to carefully consider what degree you earn, whether it be a Master of Business Administration in Healthcare online program or an MBA in Healthcare Management.
If you’re more interested in the administrative side of healthcare than the business side, please see our master of healthcare administration degree.
