Frequently Asked Questions About a Healthcare Business Management Master’s Degree
What is healthcare management?
The healthcare industry relies on numerous people and a wide range of facilities to function effectively. Patients receive direct care in settings such as hospitals, physicians’ offices, and nursing homes – but that’s not all. Pharmaceutical companies develop and distribute medications used to treat patients.
Additionally, research facilities worldwide conduct key research that seeks to better understand the human body, disease, and medicine. Health insurance companies and government agencies also often become involved in the industry. Facilities, organizations, and other entities require strong leaders and managers to operate efficiently and effectively. This is where healthcare management comes in.
Those in healthcare management oversee the multitude of teams and facilities within the healthcare industry. These professionals need industry knowledge, a keen eye for detail, and a business mindset. They may run a specific department or the entire facility.
Healthcare managers have to keep track of the facility’s finances, laws and regulations, work schedules, and service records. They plan the services of the facility and strategize and implement improvements to enhance its operation. A healthcare manager can serve a facility in a wide array of circumstances.
Which is better – healthcare management or administration?
Are you considering whether to pursue an online MBA in health administration or healthcare management? These 2 topics are often confused. However, the difference tends to lie in what is right for you and your goals.
In healthcare management, you generally focus on the business side of healthcare. For this, you will need to understand finance, operations, and the decision-making process. You will oftentimes plan and organize the facility’s operations to maximize efficiency and effectiveness. Healthcare management, at its core, is about business operations on a broad level.
An MBA in healthcare administration, on the other hand, typically focuses specifically on staffing. To succeed in hospital administration, you will often need to understand the healthcare services your facility offers so that you can make informed hiring decisions. You can then plan and organize how to use your staff effectively. Healthcare administration focuses on the day-to-day operations of the staff.
The question of which is better depends on your skills and your desires. Both roles are critical to the success of a healthcare facility. For this reason, one is not inherently better than the other; however, one may better align with your goals.
If you’re more interested in the administrative side of healthcare than the business side, please see our online Master of Science in Healthcare Administration degree.
