Liberty Insider Be In The Know About What Is Happening On Campus And Online

Boone, N.C. — Walking through the devastation left behind by Hurricane Helene in the Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina, Liberty University’s disaster relief team is seeing firsthand the heartaches of families who have endured incredible losses.

A team of 8 students and 2 team leaders from Liberty’s LU Serve Now initiative left campus on Sunday to spend the week removing debris and mold, completing mudouts, and various other tasks while offering encouragement and care to those affected.

LU Serve Now

The trip is one of 3 the university has organized in response to Hurricane Helene and in partnership with Samaritan’s Purse. Next week, 2 more teams will travel to Valdosta, Ga., and Perry, Fla. Liberty recently sent a trailer with 22 pallets of bottled water to Anchor Faith Church in Valdosta to be distributed to those in the community, and President Dondi Costin recently announced that the university would match up to $1 million in donations for hurricane disaster relief.

“One of the main goals is to give hope to people who lost everything and get students out of their comfort zone to go and do something that might not be something they would normally do on a weekly basis,” said Kathy Joiner Chamber, LU Serve director of experiential education (CSER) and a team leader in Boone. “That is to be a light in a dark time and to give people some hope, cheer them up a little bit, and let them know that other people care about what they’re going through in such a terrible time of loss. It’s important to think outside yourself.”

In the Fall of 2023, the LU Shepherd Office rolled out a new division called LU Online Shepherd. The goal was to connect with online students to be a prayer and pastoral presence in the lives of our online community. A soft launch was done with five academic schools. Fourteen months and fourteen academic schools later, LU Shepherd Online is positioned to connect with the final academic school in the B-term of Fall 2025. To date, our Online Shepherds have connected with more than 2,000 individual online students via phone and e-mail, offering prayer support and practical guidance.

Part of our practical spiritual advice is encouraging students to be connected to God and Christian community. Our newest initiative points directly to this. Online Community Groups, kicked off in conjunction with this semester’s first Campus Community on January 15th.

Modeling what was first done residentially and then recreated seven years ago with Commuter Students, Online Shepherds are now hosting multiple groups with online students from across the country.

Students are encouraged to virtually join the Office of Spiritual Development’s Campus Community Bible study held on Wednesday nights at 7:00 p.m. Historically following this gathering, residential students have gone from meeting in rows in the Vines’ Center to meeting in circles in residential halls. Now, with the power of technology, students are going from watching alone virtually to meeting in groups virtually.

The goal of the Shepherd office has always been to champion the local church and never be a replacement in the lives of residential students. Similarly, this is the goal of Online Community Groups for online students. The hope is that this service provides a shared spiritual connection to the main campus for all students, while simultaneously allowing a spiritual LU community from coast-to-coast and beyond. Online students can connect with Online Shepherds via the Prayer Request link. This link is housed on the navbar in student’s Canvas Course tab. Students can get connected to a group by visiting us on the web.
