Unlike many doctoral programs, Liberty’s online EdD degree gives you the freedom to focus on your coursework at home and complete essential hands-on training with flexible scheduling that will meet your practical needs.
In order to help you complete this comprehensive demonstration of your education expertise more quickly, Liberty’s online EdD degree integrates the doctoral dissertation research into your course material, allowing you to work toward your final project as you go.

The core content of the online EdD online program will enhance your understanding of core educational concepts while giving you practical classroom management tools and helping you publish cutting-edge research. The online EdD degree advances your skills in Quantitative and Qualitative Methods of research, establishes Advanced Learning Theory and Research skills, and provides many other essential competencies for advanced educators.
The Special Education area of study builds on the advanced research, assessment, and development skills from the core course content to apply this understanding to solve practical problems in special needs education. Students in the Special Education area of study will not only study cutting-edge trends in educational technology and learning tools but will receive in-depth training in Organization and Design of Gifted Education Programs, as well as Educational Assessment for Special Needs. With additional important practical skills such as Behavior Management, students who complete the Special Education area of study will be equipped to assist in constructing, assessing, and improving effective learning environments for special needs children at any grade level.
Please note: Liberty University’s Special Education area of study is intended to assist in any K-12 teaching environment, however, Liberty University recommends that students add grade-specific licensure for better marketability if they do not already hold an initial license.
Liberty's online EdD degree may be modified to fulfill initial teaching licensure requirements for Elementary, Middle Grades, Secondary, and Special Education. Students already with initial licensure who pursue the online EdD degree may also include requirements for advanced and add-on licensures. Please speak with an Admissions Counselor for more information about adding licensure-track requirements to the online EdD degree.

As a terminal degree, Liberty’s online Doctorate in Education will provide many new opportunities to students currently holding licensure, seeking advanced or add-on licensure, or who are working in a field that does not require licensure. Students who become a Doctor in Education through Liberty’s online EdD degree will receive a credential accredited by NCATE and will complete a doctoral dissertation that will demonstrate specialized advanced research.
You will also gain hands-on experience through group work and research mentorship so that as a graduate of the EdD degree you will be able to conduct additional research and content development in an academic setting, for third-party curriculum development companies, work in K-12 districts to develop more effective learning content, and teach at the college level. As supplemental income through adjunct college teaching, or in seeking a full-time higher education position with a college, you may be able to use your EdD degree to teach undergraduate and often graduate-level college students.
When the superintendent of his local public school system retired, Liberty University Online graduate Dr. Richard J. Ney of New Jersey submitted his application for the position.
“After an intense round of interviews where I competed against a number of other qualified candidates, I was appointed superintendent and chief school administrator [in New Jersey]. I do not believe that I would have succeeded without having completed my doctoral studies at Liberty University.”
Dr. Richard J. Ney, Doctor of Education (Ed.D.)
