Frequently Asked Questions About Liberty’s Doctor of Education in Christian Leadership – Pastoral Counseling
What is a dissertation-in-praxis?
A dissertation-in-praxis is a research project that applies academic study to a real-world problem or ministry need. You will design, implement, and evaluate a solution within a practical setting. This approach focuses on applied research rather than purely theoretical work. By the end of the process, you will have created a project that connects your doctoral studies to meaningful leadership or counseling outcomes and present this project to your faculty supervisor and academic peers.
I am a pastor who wants to counsel my congregation. What doctorate should I get?
If your role includes both preaching and counseling, this EdD in pastoral counseling Christian university program can help you study both areas together. You will explore leadership, counseling approaches, and applied research within ministry contexts. This can be especially helpful if you want to strengthen structured care within your church.
How can I specialize in counseling at the doctoral level if I already have a Master of Divinity?
If you already hold an MDiv, this online EdD in pastoral counseling degree allows you to build on your theological training. You will engage in counseling-focused coursework alongside leadership and research studies. The program’s applied research model can help you connect your ministry experience to doctoral-level inquiry.
I am a seminary graduate – should I get an EdD in pastoral counseling or a DMin?
The EdD in pastoral counseling vs. the DMin in pastoral care decision depends on your goals. A DMin often centers on ministry practice, while an EdD emphasizes leadership, education, and applied research. If you are interested in teaching, directing programs, or carrying out organizational leadership, the EdD may align more closely.
What is the difference between pastoral counseling and clinical counseling?
Pastoral counseling focuses on spiritual care and faith-based guidance, while clinical counseling centers on mental health diagnosis and treatment.
You will typically use biblical principles, prayer, and ministry-based support in pastoral counseling settings. Clinical counseling, on the other hand, often requires state licensure and training in psychological assessment and therapy techniques.
If you want to serve in a church or ministry setting, pastoral counseling fits that calling better, whereas clinical counseling fits licensed therapeutic practice.
Can I practice counseling professionally with an EdD in pastoral counseling?
You can practice counseling in ministry or non-licensure settings with an EdD in pastoral counseling. This means you may serve as a church counselor, ministry leader, or faith-based support provider. However, if you want to become a licensed professional counselor, additional clinical training and state licensure will be required. Reviewing your state’s requirements will help you understand what clinical roles versus ministry-based counseling need. For those interested in licensure pathways, our MA in Clinical Mental Health Counseling is a great option.
