Course Description

A study of the history and strategy of reaching youth through the campus structure. Attention is given to the basic workings of the campus social system and the methods used in reaching it with the gospel.

Rationale

Important to the role of the youth leader is his or her ability to evangelize and disciple youth through the local public school campus. This course will provide the youth ministry student with the proper direction towards becoming a well-adjusted, confident individual in dealing with outreach techniques on the public school campus. This course will enhance the future educational development of the youth leader and equip him or her to be a more effective leader of a local church or Christian youth organization whose focus is campus ministry.

Discussions (4)

The student will be required to give a personal response in a new thread to the topic presented in the lesson for each module: week, and reply to at least 2 other students’ threads within his/her assigned group. Each thread must contain at least 250 words, and each reply must have at least 100 words. (CLOs: B, C, E)

Legal Cases Assignment

The student will locate 3 legal cases that involve public schools and write a report of each case that includes the following subtitles: Introduction, Summary, Personal Response, Ministry Implications, and Conclusion. The report of each case must be 1 – 2 pages, and the total length of the paper must not exceed 5 pages. Each case must have at least 1 citation. (CLOs: C, E)

Reading Report Assignments (2)

The student will write 2 book summaries that are 2–3 pages each. These will be based on the You Lost Me and Engaging the Soul of Youth Culture texts. Each summary must be in current Turabian format and include at least 1 citation. (CLOs: A, B, C, D)

Student Conversation/Interview Paper Assignment

The student will talk with or interview 3 adolescents in middle or high school. Emphasis must be on ministry applications. Each conversation/interview will be summarized, including a brief profile and possibly a bio of each adolescent. The paper must be 2 – 3 pages. (CLOs: C, D, E)

School Board Reaction Paper Assignment

The student will attend a school board meeting in his or her local school system and will then write a 3 – 4-page reaction paper based on his or her observations. (CLOs: C, D, E)

Campus Ministry Strategy Paper Assignment

The student will develop a specific philosophy of campus ministry and write a 5 – 8-page paper that states the purpose of a campus ministry and how it can assist in the student’s overall philosophy. (CLOs: A, B, D, E)

Quiz: Campus Ministry

The student will complete an open-book/open-notes test based on the LectureText to Accompany Campus Ministry. The student will have 60 minutes to complete 23 fill-in-the-blank questions. (CLOs: A, B, C, D)
