Course Description

An overview of the history, philosophies, & current trends of second language research. Students will explore the multiple fields of study that comprise TESL, including education, linguistics, psychology, and cultural anthropology, all from a Christian worldview.

Rationale

Anyone venturing into a particular field of study will benefit from understanding its origins. Students interested in TESL will gain a better perspective if they acquire the history and philosophies that underlie TESL. Students will also gain a better perspective on the current trends and research interests in the field of TESL by examining its history and emerging research.

Discussions (6)

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, students are required to create a thread in response to the provided prompt. Each thread must be at least 500 words and demonstrate course-related knowledge and graduate-level writing with regard to content and style. In addition to the thread, the student is required to reply to 2 other classmates’ threads. Each reply must be 250 words. Current APA format must be used for bibliographical entries and in-text citations.

Article Critique Assignments (3)

The student will explore different topics and analyze research for a greater understanding of second language acquisition, teaching, and research. Each critique must be 2–3 pages, and use current APA format.

Methods Presentation Assignment

The student will compare, contrast, and explain given second language teaching methods in a methods presentation using PowerPoint or a similar software. This presentation must contain 15–20 slides, and a total of 10 sources.

Second Language Learning Research Paper Assignment

The student will research and write a 10–15-page paper that focuses on a facet of language that interests him/her. This paper must contain at least 15 scholarly sources and use current APA format.
