Course Description

A study of strategies for second-language acquisition and assessment. An historical approach to perspectives on second language-acquisition and proficiency. (Crosslisted with SPAN 403)

Rationale

Only with a thorough understanding of how languages are learned can language teachers effectively help their students by providing the optimal conditions for acquisition to take place. In addition, knowing about Second Language Acquisition (SLA) can guide both students’ and teachers’ expectations regarding teaching-learning processes and outcomes.

Discussions (6)

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student is required to provide a thread in response to the provided prompt for each forum. Each thread must be 250 words and demonstrate course-related knowledge. In addition to the thread, the student is required to reply to a thread of 1 classmate. Each reply must be a minimum of 125 words.

Language Learning Self-Analysis Essay Assignment

The student will analyze his or her personal language learning journey. A detailed rubric and instructions are provided in the course.

Case Study: Second Language Learner Interview Assignment

The student will identify and interview a second language learner to analyze their second language learning journey. A detailed rubric and instructions are provided within the course.

Second Language Acquisition (SLA) Research Project: Proposal Assignment

The student will write up a research proposal which will be fulfilled in conducting the research and writing a research paper setting forth the results of the research. The research proposal will include a research question, abstract, and bibliography, which are to be handed in in a single submission. A topic and research question for this assignment will be submitted separately in Module 1 to be approved by instructor. Along with more detailed instructions, a sample for this assignment is provided for guidance.

Second Language Acquisition (SLA) Research Project: Rough Draft and Final Paper Assignments (2)

The student will follow-up his or her research proposal by writing a research paper setting forth the results of the research proposal. The research project will be submitted as a rough draft and final paper submission in separate Modules. The 2 elements of the paper will be handed in separately.

Course Reflection Essay Assignment

The student will reflect on the course and connect what he or she has learned to biblical integration in the classroom.

Quizzes (6)

Each quiz will cover the Learn material for the assigned module. Each quiz will be open-book/open-notes, contain 10 multiple-choice and true/false and have a 20-minute time limit.

Quiz

The Final Exam will be cumulative, covering the Learn material for all modules. The exam will be open-book/open-notes, contain 50 multiple-choice, true/false, and short answer questions, and have a 1-hour time limit.
