SUBS 609 Healthy Sexuality

This course provides a foundational understanding of healthy sexuality based on a psychological and Scriptural foundation. Special attention is given to foundations of sexual development, sexual enrichment, challenges, brokenness, and controversial issues surrounding healthy sexuality.

Our pressing concern at the inception of course is that God cares about how we perceive, understand, and behave in regards to our sexuality. This course seeks to meet that challenge by equipping students to biblically guide individuals towards healthy sexuality.

Discussions (6)

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student will complete 6 Discussions that link with the Videos, Notes, PowerPoint Slides, and weekly readings. Each Discussion will be completed in 2 parts: 1) the student will submit a thread of at least 300 words in response to the question provided with at least 2 APA citations from the course textbooks, and 2) the student will reply to at least 1 other classmates’ threads (200 word minimum each) with at least 2 APA citations from the course textbooks. A Christian worldview or biblical themes are to be included in post.

Sexual Journey Paper Assignment

The student should complete and submit a paper that shares his or her cultural history in forming his or her sexual worldview. This paper will consist of three parts: 1) Cultural History that formed your beliefs, 2) Current Belief and Attitudes about human sexuality, and 3) reflect on the impacts of your beliefs on future work as a counselor (including steps to ensure you have dealt with past wounds). 

The purpose of this paper is to understand your own cultural history in forming your sexual worldview. This self-awareness will assist you to better be able to counsel and minister ethically and with compassion. Papers must be written in current APA format, including a title page and reference page. 

Theology of Sexuality and Sex Paper Assignment

The Theology of Sexuality and Sex Paper is woven into a biblical worldview. One’s understanding of sexuality and sex becomes the foundation upon all of sexual education and counseling is built. Accordingly, the student will develop an 8–10 page personal theology of sexuality and sex that is based upon Christian theology and that incorporates theological and secular sources. This is not a paper about counseling an issue or understanding an issue from a psychological perspective; it is not a typical research paper that you have written.

This paper will consist of three parts: 1) Theology of Sex and Sexuality from a broad, whole counsel of God, 2) The Fall and its impact on sex and sexuality, 3) Discussion of the influences of 2 – 3 themes from current culture ( Gender/sex identity, transgender surgeries, homosexual/bisexual, adultery/fornication/co-habitation, pornography, masturbation, marriage/divorce).  See the Theology of Sexuality and Sex Paper Assignment Instructions for more information.

Quizzes (5)

The student will complete five Quizzes which are cumulative and cover the material presented in the presentations and lecture notes. Each quiz is open-book/open-notes, comprised of 35 multiple-choice and true/false questions, and has a time limit of 1 hour.
