Course Description

This course includes a thorough examination of sexual addiction including the definition, neurobiology, etiology, diagnosis and treatment. Both male and female sexual addiction will be explored. Topics related to sexual addiction including marital affairs, pornography, homosexuality and lesbianism will also be covered. A biblical understanding and approach to treatment will be integrated into the course.

Rationale

Sexual addiction is an increasing problem found in the modern Christian community. Counselors and pastors need a biblical and clinical foundation to adequately understand the etiology and contributing factors to this addiction, recognize its clinical course, and develop effective counseling strategies in addressing this addiction.

Discussions (4)

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, these Discussions are designed to allow the student to interact with the presentations. For each Discussion, the student must submit a 300-word initial thread post and two 200-word reply posts to either fellow students or a question posed by the instructor. Each initial thread post must incorporate course assigned materials cited in current APA format. (CLOs: A,B,C,D)

Reaction Paper Assignment

The purpose of this assignment is to encourage the student to explore his or her own personal and professional reactions to sexual addiction. The student will read the assigned text by Laaser, entitled Healing the Wounds of Sexual Addiction, and submit a 5-page paper (not including the title page, abstract, or reference page), which provides both summary and reaction to the text. The paper must be in current APA format, with an abstract, proper subheadings, and reference citation. (CLOs: A,C)

Treatment Plan Assignment

The student will submit a treatment plan for an assigned clinical case provided by the professor. The required outline for this 5-7 page paper (not including cover page and reference page; i.e. the body of the paper should be 5-7 pages long) is found in the Grading Rubric and Treatment Plan Assignment Instructions. Topic of Interest Paper Assignment

The student will review a topic relevant to sexual addiction and submit an 8-10-page (not including title page, abstract, and reference page) paper in current APA format. The student may choose the topic, but must e-mail the instructor for approval of the topic before beginning. Topics must be related to sexual addiction and may include: pornography, the internet, prostitution, trauma, the family of origin, treatment modalities, religious beliefs, dual diagnosis, sexual abuse, power and control, etc. The paper must include at least 7 outside sources (not including the textbooks) that are from current scholarly journals. Quizzes (5)

The student will take 5 open-book/open-notes quizzes that cover the assigned Carnes and Adams textbook readings. Each quiz will have a time limit of 1 hour and contain 20 multiple-choice and true/false questions. (CLOs: A,B,D,E)
