Rationale
This course provides an overview of second-language acquisition theories and methodologies used for teaching languages, based on best practice and research in the language classroom. It exposes students to a study of applied linguistics with a focus on most common errors made by students learning Spanish. It provides a practical approach for planning for effective language instruction that includes a variety of activities, educational technology and assessments that can be used in the language classroom.

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, students are required to create a thread in response to the provided prompt. Each thread must be at least 500 words and demonstrate course-related knowledge and graduate-level writing with regard to content and style. In addition to the thread, the student is required to reply to 2 other classmates’ threads. Each reply must be 250 words. Current MLA format must be used for bibliographical entries and in-text citations. (Outcomes A-D)
Reflection Paper Assignments (3)
The student will complete 3 papers that summarize the major ideas and perspectives with the student’s own thoughts of the course content. Each reflection paper must be 2–3 pages, include at least 2 scholarly sources and use current MLA format. (Outcomes A-D)
Language Teacher Education Assignment
The student will create an action plan for professional development goals to carry out in the future. The action plan must be 2-3 pages, include at least 2 scholarly sources and use current MLA format. (Outcomes A-D)
Teaching Strategies for Language Skill Development Presentation Assignment
The student will compile a variety of teaching strategies and activities to develop reading, writing, speaking and listening skills. This presentation must contain at least 20 slides with 4–5 activities per skill area and at least 5 sources. (Outcomes A-D)
Second Language Teaching Research Paper Assignment
The student will research and write a 6–8 page paper that focuses on a language teaching environment that interests him/her. This must include at least 5 scholarly sources and use current MLA format. (Outcomes A-D)
