SOWK 425 International Social Work

Social Work in International Settings is designed to introduce students to the theoretical perspectives, values, and skills associated with contemporary international social work. Social, political, cultural, economic, organizational, religious, and technological advances that affect societal dynamics in various regions of the world will be explored.

The purpose of this course is to introduce the student to practice and policy aspects of global social work. Biological, psychological, social, and spiritual factors will be considered from a strengths perspective as they relate to global social work.

Discussions (2)

The student will complete two Discussions in this course. The student will post one thread of at least 350 words and then post two replies of at least 200 words. For each thread, the student must support his/her assertions with at least one scholarly citation in APA format as well as one citation from the Healy & Link (2012) textbook. Each reply must incorporate at least one scholarly citation(s) in APA format. Any sources cited must have been published within the last five years. Acceptable sources include the textbooks, the Bible, and other scholarly sources.

Theory and Concept Paper Assignment

The student will select a major theory of choice (e.g., human development, behavioral therapy, feminist theory, and systems theory) pertinent to social work practice. The student will analyze this theory with respect to its utility to global social work practice, and write a 2–3-page paper giving at least two examples in detail.

Book Review Assignment

After reading the Smrcek text, the student will complete a 2–3-page Book Review in current APA format. The review must contain at least 5 references to the book as well as the course textbook including Bible (provide biblical and contemporary examples).

Case Study Analysis Assignment

For this assignment, the student will develop a fictional case example set in an international context which identifies and analyzes how social work competencies can be applied to address the needs and challenges presented in the case example. The student will submit a paper of no more than two pages in APA format with no more than 4 citations from the required book of Healy and Link. In addition, acceptable sources can also be from scholarly articles published within the last five years.

PowerPoint Presentation Assignment

For this assignment, the student will create a narrated PowerPoint presentation of 10–15 slides that focuses on a special topic related to international social work. The presentation must include at least 4 references to the course textbook, scholarly journal articles and/or the Bible. References must be in current APA format.

Disaster Plan Assignment

The student will locate and review the disaster response plan for his/her community, school, or hometown in the event of terrorism, armed conflict, pandemic, etc. The student will then write a 2–3-page, APA format, response paper outlining the disaster plan and how social work plays a role in the plan. Social Work core values as well and use scripture are to be integrated into the analysis.

Quiz: Survey

The student will answer four short-answer questions on the topic of social work. The quiz will be open-book/open-notes, limited to one attempt, and have no time limit.
