SOWK 365 BSSW GATE 2 & Junior Field Enrollment

The Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) requires that all social work programs have a gatekeeping process to ensure that students have a thorough understanding of the profession of social work and will be a good fit for the program and profession. The BSSW program at Liberty University includes 4 gates. All students must apply for and be approved through all 4 gates to be eligible to graduate from the BSSW program. This SOWK 365 course includes the application process for Gate 2 and Field Proposal/Enrollment process of the BSSW program. This course is 0 credits and is Pass/Fail. Approval through Gate 2 and completion of the Field Proposal/Enrollment process indicates approval to begin Junior Field Placement (SOWK 370) in the following semester.

Successfully passing this course and gaining BSSW program approval through Gate 2 and the Field Proposal Process indicates a student’s approval to be registered for Junior Field.

Course Requirements Checklist

After reading the Course Syllabus and Student Expectations, the student will complete the related checklist found in the Course Overview.

At the beginning of each Gate course, the department will ensure eligibility for each student. Each Gate course has requirements students must meet in order to be eligible for Gate consideration and moving forward in the SOWK program. The student does NOT submit anything for this assignment. Instead, the department will independently review the student’s eligibility and grant credit for the assignment as applicable.

The student completes the Disclosure Statement Form Template to acknowledge and verify and charges, convictions, citations, etc. and to grant permission to the field education staff of the BSSW program to release information from the Disclosure Statement Form Template for the purpose of arranging field placements.  

The student will assess personal readiness and current life activities and responsibilities in preparation for field placement. The student will review the article and reflect on each component of the SHAPE model and respond to the questions provided in a Word document. For each of the 5 components, the student must state in 1-2 sentences why he/she ranked it accordingly, then identify 1-2 areas in which he/she needs to grow, including a personal course of action to improve in these areas to facilitate field preparedness.

The student will utilize provided information to complete a resume revision in preparation for an internship or employment.

The student will begin to plan for next semester in preparation for the commitment of field placement.

The student will not submit anything for this assignment. The student’s assigned field advisor will indicate whether the proposal has been approved, after the entire proposal (Forms #1-6) have been submitted correctly and completely.

Competency Self-Reflection Assignment

This assignment provides students the opportunity to reflect on their current skills and understanding of each of the nine social work competencies. Students use a provided template to evaluate their perspective of their competence for each and then identify strengths and areas for growth. Students create SMART goals for the competencies in which they’d like to grow for their junior field experience.

The student will not submit anything for this assignment. The student must successfully complete all assignments in this course and receive full approval on a field placement proposal to be eligible for Gate Approval.
