This course reviews economic principles and basic business finance approaches to decision making. The principles of healthcare financial management, including accounting and finance, are reviewed. Provides a foundation in the basic financial management skills in organizations.

Discussions (5)

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student is expected to provide one main thread that answers the question and two replies to classmates’ posts in each discussion. Main threads must be at least 500 words, include at least 1 citation, and demonstrate course-related knowledge. Each reply must be 250 words and include at least 1 citation. 

Case Study: Selection Assignment

In this assignment students will choose the case study they will be working with throughout the course for the Case Study assignments. 

This assignment will be a 1-2 page paper including a statement of the case example selected for the case study assignments and a description of why they have been chosen (including how that type of organization may apply to the student’s goals in leadership), in addition to several other components listed in the Assignment Instructions document.

Case Study: Budget Assignment

In this assignment, the student will continue working with the chosen case study from the Case Study: Selection Assignment.  In this assignment, the student will imagine that they are the leader described for the selected case and complete the planning steps outlined in the assignment instructions. This includes writing the mission of the organization, defining a strategy to accomplish the mission, developing a long-range plan that defines the organization’s objectives. Also, students will choose one of the types of budgets described in Chapter 2 and prepare that type of budget for the chosen organization.  Additional budgeting considerations (outlined in Chapter 3) will also be described.  

This assignment will include a 1-2 page description of the mission of the case organization, a 1-2 page description of the strategy proposed to use to accomplish the mission, and a 1-2 page description of the long-range plan that defines the organization’s objectives, in addition to several other components listed in the Assignment Instructions document.

Case Study: Short Term Resources Assignment

In this assignment, students will continue working with their case study and based on the mission and objectives of the organization and budget that were described in the Case Study: Budget Assignment, students will prepare a 4-6 page proposal for how the chosen organization should manage its short term resources. 

Case Study: Statements Assignment

In this assignment, students will continue working with their case study and will use Problems 10-15 and 10-16 in the textbook to prepare an activity statement (operating statement), a comparative statement of financial position (balance sheet), and a statement of cash flows (using both the direct and indirect methods) for the chosen case organization. The student will create the financial information to be reasonable to the chosen organization when preparing these statements. After creating these statements, the student will also answer the following question in a 1-2 page discussion: What do you learn from these statements, and what questions do they raise?

Case Study: Financial Analysis Assignment

In this assignment, the student will describe the major elements of financial statement analysis outlined in Chapters 14-15 of the textbook and discuss how they would be important to and conducted in the chosen case organization. 

This assignment will include a 2-3 page description of the major elements of financial statement analysis and a 2-3 page description of how those elements would be important to and conducted in the chosen case organization, in addition to several other components listed in the Assignment Instructions document.
