PSYC 857 Behavioral Healthcare Policy and Governance
Course Description
In this course, students examine economic, financial, and political factors that influence the delivery of behavioral healthcare. The behavioral healthcare policy making process is examined, as well as how behavioral health organizations can engage in relations to influence policy is examined.

Rationale
This course is designed to prepare students for policy practice and advocacy in behavioral healthcare. This course seeks to educate on the historical overview of the behavioral healthcare system in the United States and to bring awareness to the disparities faced by particular populations of focus. Thus enabling the student to address the governance aspects in behavioral healthcare organizations.

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student is required to provide a thread in response to the provided prompt for each Discussion. Each thread must be 500 words and demonstrate course-related knowledge. In addition to the thread, the student is required to reply to two other classmates’ threads. Each reply must be 250 words. Policy Presentation: Topic Submission Assignment
The student will write a three-page description of the proposed policy topic including relevant historical information, and any gap in the current area of behavioral healthcare disparity. The paper must be in current APA format. The paper must include at least 15 peer reviewed journal articles (within five years) on the chosen topic. Policy Presentation: Annotated Bibliography Assignment
The student will present 20 peer reviewed articles related to the chosen topic from the Policy Presentation: Topic Submission Assignment. The assignment must be in APA annotated bibliography format. There is no required page length. The annotated bibliography will be used in the Policy Presentation: Policy Proposal Assignment and the Policy Presentation: Narrated PowerPoint Assignment. Policy Presentation: Policy Proposal Assignment
The student will create a policy proposal based on the Policy Presentation: Topic Submission Assignment and Policy Presentation: Annotated Bibliography Assignment. The proposed policy must be in the template provided in the classroom. Please see the instructions for the Policy Presentation: Policy Proposal Assignment. (MLO’s: A, B, C, D, E, F)
Policy Presentation: Narrated PowerPoint Assignment
The student will prepare a narrated PowerPoint presentation on their policy topic. The PowerPoint presentation is culmination of the Policy Presentation aspects throughout the course. The student will provide relevant historical information, any gap in the current area, describe the behavioral healthcare disparity, evaluate the current opportunities for advocacy, and provide a biblical discussion of the topic. The presentation will include sources cited in the annotated bibliography. PowerPoint must include a reference section in current APA style. The student will also narrate the presentation as if presenting to a Board of Directors, Organizational leadership or legislators.
