PSYC 831 Advanced Child and Adolescent Development

Advanced study of the unique physical, social, psychological and cognitive development of children and adolescents. Developmental theories and research aimed at understanding the unique needs and stages in childhood and adolescence will be examined.

This course is intended for doctoral level students to deepen their understanding of complex development that children and adolescents go through. The student will gain a greater understanding of the research involving healthy neurotypical development.

Discussions (5)

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student is required to provide a thread in response to the provided topic for each discussion. Discussions must be at least 500 words and demonstrate course-related knowledge. In addition to the initial main post, the student is required to reply to two other classmates’ threads. Each reply must be 250 words. For each thread, the student must support their assertions with at least 2 scholarly citations in APA format. (CLOs: A, B, C D, E)

Article Review Assignment

The student will act as a peer reviewer for a scholarly journal of child and adolescent developmental psychology. The student will pick a journal article on a developmental topic and write a 2–3-page paper providing a critical analysis and review of the article. (CLOs: B, D)

Theory Comparison Assignment

The student will pick a topic related to child and adolescent developmental psychology and write a 2–3-page paper providing a discussion and comparison of the topic using two different developmental theories. (CLOs: A, C, D)

Intervention Portfolio Assignment

The student will choose a specific developmental topic that children may require intervention support. The student will present research related to understanding the developmental topic as well as three different intervention strategies that are supported in the research for that particular developmental topic. A reference section with at least 10 journal articles on the topic is required. (CLOs: A, B, D)

Research Proposal and Presentation Assignment

The student will develop a Research Proposal and Presentation on any topic related to child or adolescent development. The research proposal paper must be at least 15 pages in length and the presentation must be at least 15 minutes. The Research Proposal and Presentation must include a literature review, problem statement, purpose statement, research questions, and a proposed methodology. A reference section with at least 15 journal articles on the topic is required. (CLOs: A, B. C, D)

Quizzes (2)

Each quiz will cover the Learn section for the assigned Modules: Weeks. Each quiz will be open-book/open-notes, contain 5 essay questions, and have a 2 hour and 30 minute time limit. (CLOs: A, B, C, D, E)
