PSYC 306 Advanced Theory and Treatment of Substance Abuse

This course will focus on the major evidence-based treatment approaches and the theories on which they are based. Advanced information on the theory and treatment of substance use disorder will be discussed. Topics covered will include motivational interviewing, contingency management, the 12-step recovery model, and family therapy techniques.

An advanced understanding of the theories of substance abuse is foundational to the development of recovery professionals. This course is intended for the student who intends to work in the field of substance abuse either as a researcher or clinician.

Discussions (4)

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student will complete 4 discussion assignments for this course. For each of the 4 discussions, the student will write a substantive thread of a minimum of 250 words in response to questions posed by the instructor. A reply of a minimum of 150 words will then be written to at least 1 other student’s thread. All posts must be academic in nature, meaning they must include citations and references in current APA format. Initial threads must utilize at least 2 scholarly citations, and replies must utilize at least 1 scholarly citation. You are welcome to use outside resources to make your points and are encouraged to do so. (CLO: A, B, C, D, E, & F)

Support Group Assignments (3)

Support Group: Selection Form Assignment

The student will identify a 12-step fellowship group (Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, or Al-Anon Anonymous) which he/she will attend at least 3 times throughout the course. The student will then complete and submit the Support Group: Selection Form Template describing the purpose of the chosen support group in 2 paragraphs. The student must cite and reference at least 1 academic source. All sources used must be cited in current APA format. 

Support Group: Attendance Form Assignment

The student will print a copy of the Support Group: Attendance Form Template and request the support group leader’s signature for each of the 3 sessions he/she attends. Digital forms of proof that provide all the required information are acceptable as well.

Support Group: Paper Assignment

The student will write a 6–8-page research-based paper (not including the title or reference pages) in current APA format that analyzes and summarizes the sessions they attended. The paper must include 4–6 academic sources, 4 of which must be from peer-reviewed journal articles. The paper format must utilize the provided headings. (CLO: A, C, D, E, & F)

The student will write a 3-5-page research-based paper (not including the title and reference pages) in current APA format that analyzes a specific behavioral addiction. The paper must include 3-5 academic sources, 3 of which must come from peer-reviewed journal articles. The paper format must utilize the provided headings. (CLO: A, C, D, E, & F) 

Quizzes (4)

The student will complete 4 quizzes, each consisting of 50 multiple-choice and true/false questions covering the textbook readings and presentations. All quizzes are open-book/open-notes. All quizzes will have a 1 hour and 15-minute time limit and will allow for 1 attempt. (CLO: A, B, C, D, & E,)
