PHGT 514 Public Health Competency Exam

The purpose of this course is to ensure students meet the required accreditation and departmental standards of the Master of Public Health program. The course consists of the required competency exam students must pass to successfully complete the program, which measures the substantive and integrative knowledge of the field of public health.

This is the final gate in the MPH program. The competency exam must be passed in order to progress to practicum.

Course Requirements Checklist

After reading the Course Syllabus and Student Expectations, the student will complete the related checklist found in the Course Overview.

The student will complete a plan to join study groups and self-reflect on his/her strengths and areas for growth in a quiz. (CLO: A, B, C)

The student will complete the first attempt of the Required Competency Exam in Week 2. If the exam is passed with a 70% or higher, the student will not need to take another attempt. Anything below 70% will require an additional attempt. The student will have up to 3 attempts to take the exam.

The student will take a Check-in Quiz in Weeks 4 and 7. If needed, based on the check-in quiz, a second and third attempt will be assigned and taken at that time.

Failure to pass the exam successfully will result in dismissal from the graduate program. Successful completion of this is a requirement. (CLO: A, B, C, D, G)

The student will receive practicum paperwork, instructions, and materials. The student will connect with the Practicum Director. Assignments will include two quizzes on setting up the practicum, one quiz on SMART objectives, and a quiz demonstrating an application submission for the practicum to InPlace. Assignments are for the practicum preparation and application. (CLO: E, F, G)
