Course Description

This course introduces students to the theories and skills required to provide pastoral crisis intervention and counseling that will cultivate resiliency and promote spiritual growth.

Rationale

The crisis phase is a critical period that all people may experience many times throughout the course of life. It behooves the practitioner to develop theoretical rationale and a course of action that will guide him/her as he/she works as an intervener in the client’s situation.

Journal Article Review Assignments (2)

The student will complete 2 Journal Article Reviews based upon professional, peer-reviewed journal articles provided in the course. Each review must be at least 3 pages, include a title and reference page, and be in current APA or Turabian standards. (CLOs: A, B, D, E, G)

Discussions (3)

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student will complete 3 Discussions in this course. Each thread is required to be at least 400 words and must be supported by thoughtful analysis and research. In addition to the thread, the student is required to reply to at least 2 other classmates’ threads. Each reply must be at least 200 words. At least 2 scholarly sources must be cited in current APA or Turabian standards. (CLOs: A, B, C, D, E, F, G)

Community Referral Notebook Assignment

The student will develop a notebook that must include at least 1 local, state, and national referral resource for each dimension of crisis care as specified in the grading rubric to be used in various crises experienced by his/her community. (CLOs: C, D, F)

Crisis Case Management Paper Assignment

The student will view a family crisis case via video link and provide crisis intervention for 1 family member utilizing the models of crisis intervention discussed in the textbooks by Wright and Johnson & Johnson. The student will then write a 4-page paper in current APA or Turabian standards detailing his/her chosen crisis intervention strategies. (CLOs: B, D, E, G)

Quizzes (14)

Each quiz will cover the Learn material for its respective AACC Suicide PAIR Certification Program DVD presentation. Each quiz will be open-book/open-notes, contain 10 multiple-choice and true/false questions, and have a time limit of 30 minutes. At the conclusion of the course, the student is encouraged to submit the AACC final exam electronic scan form, included in his or her AACC workbook, with his or her quiz answers to the AACC to achieve Suicide PAIR Certification.
