This course introduces students to the constructs of Ethnicity, Families, and Counseling. It focuses on the contribution of ethnic background to family makeup and functioning. Major ethnic minorities are studied along with the counseling approaches appropriate to each.

Today’s society is diverse. Tomorrow’s world will contain an even more multicultural mix. In order to possess the values, knowledge, and skills to impact tomorrow’s world in a way that reflects God’s love and compassion, today’s ministers, especially pastoral counselors, must be prepared to work effectively and efficiently with this increasingly diverse population.

After reading the Course Syllabus and Student Expectations, the student will complete the related checklist found in the Course Overview.
Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student will participate in 4 Discussions designed to allow the student to interact with course materials. Each Discussion consists of a 500-word thread and at least 1 reply to a classmate that is at least 250 words. The student must incorporate and synthesize course materials, support his or her assertions using scholarly research, and use current APA or Turabian format. There should be at least one reference in each thread and each response, with corresponding citations. (CLO: A, B, C, D, E, H, I)
Mid-Course Reflection Assignment
The student will select 1 of 5 approved topics for this essay. The paper must demonstrate a contemplative reflection of course concepts. The paper must include at least 2 scholarly sources outside of course materials. The paper should include 3-6 pages of content and must be formatted in current APA or Turabian format. Book Response Assignment
After reading Seeking Allah, Findng Jesus, the student will provide a research-based commentary on Islam. The student will then discuss the author’s (Qureshi) conversion to Christianity. Finally, the student will address a pastoral counseling case study. This assignment must be 4-8 pages (excluding the title page and reference page) and include at least one citation. Exam Creation Assignments (2)
In these assignments, the student will create a mock exam covering the chapters in the Sue, et. al. text, and create 4 questions per chapter plus 2 essay (constructive response) questions of the student's choice. (CLO: A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I)
Exam Creation 1: Introduction to Multicultural Counseling Assignment
The student will create a quiz with a total of 22 questions, including 20 multiple choice and 2 essay questions.
Exam Creation 2: Counseling Multicultural Populations Assignment
The student will create a quiz with a total of 18 questions, including 16 multiple choice and 2 essay questions.
Annotated Outline Presentations Assignment
In this assignment, the student will create 2 presentations in annotated outline form. The purpose of this assignment is for the student to demonstrate sensitivity and attention to two different audiences, one secular and the other faith-based. Each presentation should be 1-2 pages in length and include at least 3 resources. (CLO: B, D, E, G, H)
Course Presentations Reflection Assignment
This assignment is designed to replicate a comprehensive final exam, of sorts, focusing on the modules’ PowerPoint and accompanying oral presentations. The student should have at least a 1-paged reflection for each module. (CLO: A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I)
