Course Description

This course investigates morphological and syntactic theory and analysis. It will evaluate the relationship between syntax and
morphology.

Rationale

Understanding the intricacies of language is dependent on the knowledge of the structure of words that make up sentences, which is the domain of Morphology. The study of how sentences are structured in different languages is central to research in theoretical and applied linguistics. Advanced Morphology and Syntax furnishes aspiring linguists and language practitioners with the requisite knowledge and skill for success in their undertakings.

Discussions (6)

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student will discuss course materials through an online forum focused on the material presented in the course. The student will contribute to the discussion by posting a response to the discussion prompt and by responding to classmates' posts.

Language Practice Assignments (10)

The Language Practice Assignments which follow up on notions discussed in the modules comprise 2 parts: General Set Problems and Challenge Problem Sets. While the General Set Problems help students to consolidate their understanding of the concepts learned, the Challenge Problems Sets give them the opportunity to sharpen their critical skills by questioning claims made in the module. Each critique/assessment should conform to the standards of scholarly writing following APA style.   

Quiz: Exams (2)

Each exam will cover Learn material throughout the course. The Midterm Exam will cover the material from Modules 1–5, and the Final Exam will cover the material from Modules 9–13. Each will be open-book and open-notes, contain 32 multiple-choice, short-answer, multiple-answer, matching, fill-in-the-blank, and short essay questions and will have a 1-hour and 50-minute time limit.

Research Project Assignments (5)

The student will investigate a research problem in syntax and or morphology. The research will be conducted in phases over the term beginning with the development of a research question/hypothesis, the design of the method for data collection, compilation and analysis of data and the presentation of the findings from the study in a research paper. The presentation of each phase should adhere to APA style. The Phases include:

  • Phase 1: Preliminaries (Topic, Research Question/Hypothesis; Abstract, & Working Bibliography) Assignment
  • Phase 2: Introduction, Literature and Data Collection Assignment
  • Phase 3: Analysis, Findings and Discussions Assignment
  • Phase 4: Initial Draft Assignment
  • Phase 5: Final Research Paper Assignment
