Course Description

This course will examine how to identify and equip key members of a church’s staff. Principles and methods will be analyzed and defined for foundational leadership skills.

Rationale

The church needs pastoral leaders who can develop staff members to think strategically in leading ministries within the church. The successful implementation of a church’s strategic plan is in direct proportion to the leader’s skill and spiritual maturity. This course addresses the leader’s spirituality and provides the tools and methods necessary for strategic planning.

Discussions (3)

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences; therefore, the student is required to provide a thread in response to the provided prompt for each discussion. Each thread must be at least 800 words and supported with 2 scholarly citations in Turabian format and 2 Bible integrations. The student is required to reply to 3 other classmates’ threads with thoughtful analysis and each reply must be at least 200 words. (CLOs: A, B, E)

Student's Log Assignments (4)

The student will write 4 Student's Log entries recounting his/her spiritual reflections based on textbook readings and/or student interaction in discussions. Prompts for each Student's Log will be provided. The student must incorporate at least 1 biblical integration and write a minimum of 300 words for each Student's Log entry. (CLOs: B, C, D)

Reflection Paper Assignments (4)

The student will write 4 reflection papers based on the assigned topic for that particular module. Each paper must include 3 separate headings: Introduction, Content, and Conclusion. The essay must also include a title page, contents, footnotes, and bibliography; follow Turabian format; and have a minimum of 2,000 words and 5 scholarly sources in addition to the course textbooks and the Bible. (CLOs: B, D, E)

Research Paper Outline Assignment

The student will write a brief one-page outline for his/her research paper to include major headings and subheadings. The outline must be in sentence or bullet format, and include a suggested bibliography of at least 10 academic sources in addition to the course textbooks. (CLOs: A, E, F)

Research Paper Assignment

The student will write a research paper of at least 6,000 words in current Turabian format developing a strategic plan for a hypothetical local church. The plan must include the following 3 major headings and appropriate subheadings as follows:

  • Introduction
  • Content
    • The Leader’s Character-Driven Habits
    • Development of the Mission
    • Development of the Vision
    • Discovery of the Core Values
    • Design of the Strategy
    • Outreach into the Community
    • Making Disciples
    • Building the Team
    • Assessing the Setting
    • Raising Finances
  • Conclusion

The research paper must include a title page, contents page, proper headings and pagination, footnotes, and bibliography. Additionally, the essay must have at least 20 footnote citations from course textbooks and 10 additional scholarly sources; and 5 integrated biblical passages. (CLOs: A, B, E, F)
