Course Description

This course provides an overview of the laws related to health care in the United States. Subjects to be covered include the licensing and monitoring of healthcare professionals, the professional-patient relationship and duties to treat, liability that may attach to healthcare professionals and businesses, healthcare financing including public and private sources, fraud and abuse and business aspects of healthcare including anittrust. This course allows students to becone conversant with the current complexities of healthcare law and understand emerging trends in this evolving body of law.

Rationale

Health Law Survey is the foundational course needed for the study of health care law in this program. It offers the student an introduction to the study of health law in the United States. Given the increasing importance of health care law in this country, this course is invaluable in preparing the student to tackle health law related issues.

Discussions (2)

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student is required to provide a thread in response to the provided prompt for each Discussion. Each thread must be 250–500 words and demonstrate course-related knowledge. In addition to the thread, the student is required to reply to 2 other classmates’ threads. Each reply must be 150–300 words.

There will be thirty-six (36) Homework Assignments, consisting of polls and concept checks.

There will be nine (9) Case Study Assignments completed in Cengage.

ACA Essay Assignment

The student will write a 1000–1200-word essay, in proper Bluebook formatting, on 3 ACA approaches to increase insurance coverage by answering the questions provided in the instructions.

Quizzes (8)

There will be 8 quizzes covering the Learn materials. Six quizzes will consist of 20 true/false, multiple-choice and/or matching questions; they will be open-book/open-notes. Two quizzes will consist of two short essay questions, with a time limit of 1 hour 15 minutes; they will be open-book/open-notes.
