INFO 535 Health Systems and Delivery

This advanced course examines the delivery models of healthcare, the regulatory environment of health care, and the professional roles of people in healthcare. Investigative topics include the different states of disease, medicine, public health, financing, and new relational fields within the United States healthcare systems. The examination will address the changing practices and innovations of medicine and relational services.

This course provides the student in the graduate Healthcare Informatics program with a fundamental understanding of key concepts in the delivery of healthcare in the United States. Focus is placed on the dynamics of the healthcare system and the interaction of providers (hospitals, physicians, etc.), patients, and sources of healthcare financing (Medicaid, private health insurance, etc.). Current health policy and management issues, and options related to the delivery, financing, quality, and access of healthcare services, are also covered.

Discussions (4)

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student is required to create a thread in response to the provided prompt for each discussion. Each thread must be at least 600 words and demonstrate course-related knowledge. In addition to the thread, the student is required to reply to 2 other classmates’ threads. Each reply must be at least 450 words. Each thread and reply must include at least 2 peer-reviewed source citations and 1 biblical integration source in current APA format.

Position Paper Assignment

The student will write an 1,800-word paper in current APA format stating his or her position as to whether healthcare in the United States is a right or a privilege. The student’s position must be supported by at least 3 rationales. The paper must also provide definition and details associated with the position. Finally, the paper must relate the student’s position to his or her Christian worldview. The paper must include at least 12 scholarly, researched references.

Research Paper Assignments (5)

The student will write a 4,500-word research-based paper in current APA format that focuses on the Affordable Care Act. The development of the paper will occur in stages throughout the course with defined deadlines for specific elements. The paper must include at least 30 scholarly, researched references, each of which has been published within the past 3 years, in addition to the course textbook and the Bible. The paper will outline potential future research in this area with hypothetical methods and discussion sections as outlined below.

Research Paper: Statement of Problem Assignment

The student will write a 600-word paper in current APA format that summarizes the Affordable Care Act and defines the specific aspect of the act that he or she will address in the form of a problem statement. The problem statement will outline the basic facts of the problem, explain why the problem matters, and propose a quick, direct solution. Any sources used should be scholarly resources cited in current APA format.

Research Paper: Annotated Bibliography Assignment

The student will research 10 scholarly, researched articles from peer-reviewed journals to establish a foundation for the Research Paper: Final Submission Assignment. Current APA formatting must be used.

Research Paper: Outline Assignment

The student will complete a full-sentence outline in preparation for the final written assignment. The outline will include a thesis statement, the issues being addressed, how much space will be allotted to each section of the paper, and a preliminary reference list of at least 10 scholarly, researched sources. Note: The final paper will include the following elements: outline, introduction, literature review, problem statement, research questions, methods, discussion, references, and annotated bibliography.

Research Paper: Final Submission Assignment

The student will compose the final version of the 4,500-word paper in current APA format. The paper will include fully developed elements from the problem statement and the outline as well as the appropriate number of references. The final research paper must include the following:

Research Paper: PowerPoint Presentation Assignment

The student will develop a PowerPoint presentation that includes the most salient information from problem statement, research questions, methods, and discussion sections of the Research Paper: Final Submission Assignment. No new content or information is to be included in this presentation. The intent is for the student to demonstrate his or her ability to create an effective presentation suitable for use with senior leadership of a healthcare organization.

Current State Summary and Reaction Paper Assignments (2)

The student will identify a publication and/or video news story from a scholarly, researched website or a publication that focuses on a topic associated with the assigned module/week. The publication/video must have been presented within the last 3 months. The student will summarize the information presented and provide a reaction that incorporates biblical integration and is supported by at least 3 scholarly sources. The paper must be 900 words and in current APA format.

Peer-Reviewed Article Critique Assignment

The student will select a peer-reviewed article (not included in the required readings for the module) related to the topic of the assigned module. The article must have been published within the last 3 years. The critique will be 900 words and follow current APA format. In addition to the article, the student must include at least 9 scholarly, researched references.

IT Policies and Regulation Critique Assignment

Using a minimum of 2,000 words and 10 scholarly journal articles, the student will evaluate the IT policies of a healthcare organization and how these influence legal and safe healthcare. The student will compare and contrast a minimum of 2 IT healthcare legal cases, 3 associated IT healthcare laws, and a minimum of 3 major health IT standards relevant to IT in healthcare when addressing this question.

Quizzes (5)

Each quiz will cover the textbook material for the module in which it is assigned. Each quiz will be open-book/open-notes and contain 18 multiple-choice, multiple answer, true/false, and essay questions. Each quiz will have a time limit of 30 minutes and will allow for 1 attempt.
