Development of coding and classification systems; analysis of the structure and organization of the medical coding functions within the healthcare system; emphasizing the importance on ICD and CPT coding considerations, process evaluation and improvement, billing reimbursement, and related reporting issues central to effective and efficient operation and compliance.

The student will demonstrate an understanding of the healthcare delivery system, collection of information, and compliance. To be successful in healthcare today, proper record keeping, analysis, and translation of data into useful information is necessary in order to increase efficiency and decrease costs.
Course Requirements Checklist
After reading the Course Syllabus and Student Expectations, the student will complete the related checklist found in the Course Overview.
Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student is required to create a thread in response to the provided prompt for each forum. Each thread must be at least 300 words and demonstrate course-related knowledge using at least 2 scholarly sources. In addition to the thread, the student is required to reply to 2 other classmates’ threads and demonstrate course-related knowledge using at least 1 scholarly source. Each reply must be at least 150 words.
Ethical Decisions in Medical Records Paper Assignment
The student will write a 750–1,000-word paper in current APA format that focuses on examples of current illegal and unethical practices as they pertain to healthcare reimbursement. The paper must include at least 3 scholarly sources in addition to the course textbook and the Bible.
Journal Article Review Assignment
The student will review at least 2 articles published within the past 3 years that discuss the complexities involved in implementing a new electronic health record system from a current paper system process. The review must be at least 750–1,000 words and include at least 2 scholarly sources in addition to the course textbook and the Bible.
Application-Based Activity Assignments (3)
Each Application-Based Activity will cover the Learn material for the previous and assigned modules: weeks. Each Application-Based Activity will be a guided simulation covering various healthcare topics and medical office scenarios. There is no time limit to complete each Application-Based Activity Assignment.
Simulation: Diagnostic Coding Practice and Assessment Assignments (3)
The student will complete Simulation: Diagnostic Coding (Part 1 and 2). This demonstration and practice will assist the student with medical terms and ICD Codes learned during Module 7: Week 7. The student will have to pass Simulation: Entering CPT and ICD Codes to earn credit for the week.
Each quiz will cover the Learn material for the previous and assigned modules: weeks. Each quiz will be open-book/open-notes, contain 25 multiple-choice questions, and have a 40-minute time limit.
The Quiz: Final will cover the Learn material for the assigned modules/weeks. The quiz will be open-book/open-notes, contain 40 multiple-choice questions, and have a 1-hour time limit.
