HSCI 989 Dissertation III

This course is the final step in developing the dissertation manuscript. Doctoral candidates will conduct their field study, analyze their data, and present their findings and develop chapter 4 and 5 of their dissertation. Candidates will combine all sections into their completed dissertation manuscript in preparation for their dissertation defense. Students who do not successfully defend their dissertation must re-enroll in HSCI 989.

HSCI 989 is the third step for the PhD doctoral candidate in Health Sciences. Under the direction of a dissertation chair, the doctoral candidate writes a dissertation manuscript in preparation for the dissertation defense. The candidate must successfully complete the dissertation manuscript to enroll in HSCI 990.

Dissertation Assignments

Dissertation: Chapters 1 – 3 Assignment

The candidate will submit the final draft of Chapters 1–3 of his or her dissertation. This draft should reflect revisions based on mentor feedback from the first draft submission (CLO: C, D).

Dissertation: Chapters 4 – 5 Assignment

The candidate will revise and submit Chapters 4 and 5 of his or her dissertation (CLO: C, D).

Dissertation: Chapters 1 – 5 Assignment

The candidate will submit a revision of the entire dissertation, with all concerns addressed (CLO: C, D). 

Dissertation: Chapters 1 – 5 Resubmission Assignment

The candidate will resubmit his or her manuscript for Chapters 1–5 of the dissertation. Some students will need to use this resubmission to incorporate additional feedback they have received from their committees, while others will not (CLO: C, D).

Dissertation: Final Draft Submission

Using the guidelines available in the Dissertation Handbook, the candidate will plan, prepare, and present his or her Dissertation Defense. The candidate will submit the PowerPoint presentation he or she intends to use during the Dissertation Defense. The candidate should review the chair’s feedback and make any suggested corrections prior to the defense (CLO: C, D).

Dissertation: Defense PowerPoint Assignment

The candidate will upload a PowerPoint draft of his or her defense presentation for the chair and committee review before the final defense (CLO: F). 

Quiz: Teams Synchronous Meetings (3)

It is critical that the candidate continues to communicate frequently with his or her chair and committee. The goal of these synchronous meetings is to make sure that the candidate and committee are sharing updates, expectations, goals, and roadblocks with one another (CLO: A).

Quiz: Timeline and Semester Goals

The candidate will create a timeline related to when he or she expects to complete each step of the dissertation process, along with his or her goals for the semester. The purpose of this assignment is to assist the candidate with time management (CLO: B).

Quiz: Worldview, Vocation, and Future Goals (Optional)

This quiz is optional but helpful for our internal programmatic assessment and the evolution of the program. The candidate will complete 3 essay questions describing his or her worldview, vocation, and future goals.

Quiz: Defense Schedule

This quiz will confirm that a defense/HSCI 990 has been scheduled, or the student will be re-enrolling in HSCI 989 for another term (CLO: E).
