HSCI 988 Dissertation II
Course Description
In the second course of the PhD dissertation sequence, students will advance their research by obtaining IRB approval and conducting data collection. This course ensures that students have the necessary skills and knowledge to effectively manage their research project and adhere to ethical standards throughout the data collection process. If a student is not ready for enrollment in HSCI 989 after completing HSCI 988, they may be required, as determined by the student’s dissertation chair, to repeat HSCI 988 until they are deemed ready for enrollment in HSCI 989.

Course Requirements Checklist
After reading the Syllabus and Student Expectations, the student will complete the related checklist found in the Course Overview.
Quiz: Timeline and Semester Goals
The candidate will create a timeline related to when they expect to complete each step of the dissertation process along with their goals for the semester. The purpose of this assignment is to assist candidates with time management (CLO: B).
Quiz: Teams Synchronous Meetings (4)
It is critical that the student and their Chair and their committees continue to communicate frequently. The goal of these synchronous meetings is to make sure that the student and committee are sharing updates, expectations, goals, and roadblocks with one another. For the First, Second, and Third synchronous meetings, only the student and the Chair need to be present for these meetings. For the Fourth meeting all committee members should be present (student, chair, and committee members). (CLO: A).
Quiz: CITI Training Completion
All students must go through the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI). The link that launches students into this training can be found in the Learn material (CLO: E).
Quiz: IRB Application Submission
IRB review and approval is needed before any participants may be recruited or data may be collected. The chair MUST be copied on any email communication with the IRB. Once IRB Approval is submitted, upload a copy of the submission to this quiz. Do not move forward in data collection until the application has been reviewed and fully approved. Additional information can be found in the Dissertation Handbook provide in the SHS Doctoral Community in Canvas (CLO: D & E).
Quiz: Progress Reports (2)
Students will meet virtually with their mentor to review the progress made so far and discus next steps. This meeting will be verified through a quiz. (CLO: A)
Dissertation Chapter Drafts (4)
Dissertation: Chapter 4 Assignment
Chapter 4: Findings–students should use the qualitative or quantitative templates provided to you in the SHS Doctoral Community for the quantitative or qualitative templates for chapter 4. This will provide a baseline for what to include in this chapter (CLO: C, D, & E).
Dissertation: Chapter 4 Resubmission Assignment
In this resubmission, students should address (using tracked changes) what they have edited from the last round of feedback from their Chair/committee. A dissertation chair wants to see the development of ideas, writing, style, argumentation, and support—demonstrate this by addressing their concerns in this resubmission. At times this will mean additional citations, additional evidence, rewriting or reworking sections, or simply the refinement of your prose (CLO: C, D, & E).
Dissertation: Chapter 4 or 5 Assignment
In this third submission for this course, students should make sure to work with their chair to know what chapter they should focus upon for this assignment. Some students will be ready to start working on preliminary portions of Chapter 5, while other students will need to keep working (and reworking) chapter 4 (CLO: C, D, & E).
Dissertation: Chapter 4-5 Assignment
In this fourth submission, students will include a revised version of Chapter 4. Before submitting, students should discuss with their chair whether they want a clean draft of this chapter or whether they want to see tracked changes.
Students will also include chapter 5, up to the point you are able. For those still working on Data Analysis—this may mean that chapter 5 is a preliminary outline anticipating where the student thinks he or she will take the discussion. For others, it may mean a significant draft of chapter 5 or a nearly completed draft if the student is that far into their project (CLO: C, D, & E).
Quiz: Next Steps
This quiz asks four short answer/essay questions and one t/f question. These questions are to help you cement in your mind some of the next steps as you continue to progress toward your ultimate goal of finishing this dissertation (CLO: A, B, & D).
