HSCI 405 Environmental Health for Health Science Professionals

This course explores people’s relationship with their environment, the risk management choices made, and the resulting associations that affect the health and physical well-being of individuals, communities, and susceptible populations. Environmental factors, including biological, physical, and chemical factors that affect the health of a community will be introduced. The course focuses on the science and practice of preventing injury and illness from exposure to environmental hazards.

New environmental threats and concerns present their danger to the planet’s ecology and the human inhabitants’ health. Humanity’s God-ordained role as stewards is not to destroy but rather to work and keep the earth (Genesis 1:28, 2:15). This course is designed to help prepare the Christian student in Health Sciences take a leadership role in protecting the environment to safeguard human wellness.

Discussions (5)

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student must provide a thread in response to the provided prompt for each discussion. Each thread must be at least 500 words and demonstrate course-related knowledge. Each thread must also contain at least 3 references in current APA format. In addition to the thread, the student must reply to 2 other classmates’ threads. Each reply must be at least 250 words and contain at least 1 reference in current APA format.

Conservation Coalition Project Assignment

The student will create a 5–10-minute PowerPoint or Adobe Spark presentation that synthesizes what he/she has learned from the conservation effort chosen. The student will discuss risk management and risk communication in relation to environmental justice and equity. The student will attempt to convince a lay audience to adopt the chosen conservation effort. The presentation must contain a minimum of 10 slides. Any references used must follow current APA format.

Research Paper Assignments (3)

The student will explore a current environmental issue related to human health. The student will compare national and international agencies, policies, and systems approaches to mitigating an environmental issue. The paper will incorporate a systems approach to recommendations to improve population health. The student will write a 7-page (2000-word) research paper that includes a thorough discussion of the science behind the issue and the theory and possible policies for mitigating the associated problems. This assignment will be submitted in 3 parts:

Research Paper: Topic Selection Assignment

The topic will be chosen from a list provided by the instructor and must be submitted.

Research Paper: Annotated Bibliography Assignment

The student will submit an annotated bibliography containing a minimum of 5 scholarly references. Each reference must contain an synopsis/critique of 50-100 words. The annotated bibliography must be submitted in current APA format.

Research Paper: Final Assignment

The student will submit the final version of his/her paper.
