Rationale
Columbus’ voyage and arrival in the Americas in 1492 initiated a host of historical processes, the reverberations of which are still felt today. Following the initial contact and conquests of Europeans in the Americas, the Atlantic world became an arena of intensive migration, markets, and cultural interaction. Europeans and Africans, free and unfree, crossed the Atlantic and interacted with Native Americans as they inhabited a new environment. In the process of making a “new world,” they also remade themselves. This course examines those events, people, and cultures that made up the Atlantic World and the historical processes that were set in motion. This course expands the world history offerings in the history department and offers the student an avenue to examine this crucial period in the development of an Atlantic hemispheric culture.
