HIST 309 Historic Fashion and Design

This is a historical survey of Western fashion and design focused on aesthetics, social and political history, and cultural and artistic trends. Textiles, period silhouettes, and fashion details will be investigated using applied and cultural methodologies.

Discussions (2)

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. There are two Discussions throughout this course. The student is required to provide a thread in response to the provided prompt for each discussion. Each thread must be 350 – 400 words and demonstrate course-related knowledge. In addition to the thread, the student is required to reply to two other classmates’ threads. Each reply must be 150-200 words.

Discussion: 20th Century Fashion Designer Presentation

The student will create a Power Point presentation of a 20th century fashion designer selected from a provided list. Presentation must include at least 15 slides, notes, and the materials listed in the assignment prompt. 

Costume Historian Draft Assignment

The Costume Historian Draft Assignment will be checked for originality via the Turnitin plagiarism tool. This assignment will allow students to submit a draft of the Costume Historian Final Assignment and make any necessary edits prior to submitting the final assignment.

Costume Historian Final Assignment

The student will write a 500-word essay, in current Turabian format, analyzing an original artifact following professional costume historian guidelines.

Creative Writing Draft Assignment

The Creative Writing Draft Assignment will be checked for originality via the Turnitin plagiarism tool. This assignment will allow students to submit a draft of the Creative Writing Final Assignment and make any necessary edits prior to submitting the final assignment.

Creative Writing Final Assignment

The student will write a creative writing project based on the selected topic. The paper should be imaginative, 500 words long and based on scholarly research of the topic assigned.

Film Costume Analysis Draft Assignment

The Film Costume Analysis Draft Assignment will be checked for originality via the Turnitin plagiarism tool. This assignment will allow students to submit a draft of the Film Costume Analysis Final Assignment and make any necessary edits prior to submitting the final assignment.

Film Costume Analysis Final Assignment

The student will write a 500-word analysis, in current Turabian format, of the costumes in a self-selected film. The analysis must address the costume designer objectives of setting the tone and style, time and place, characterization and relationships between characters, the practical needs of performers and production theme.

Journal Draft Assignments (2)

Each Journal Draft Assignment will be checked for originality via the Turnitin plagiarism tool. This assignment will allow students to submit a draft of each Journal Draft Final Assignment and make any necessary edits prior to submitting the final assignment.

Journal Final Assignments (2)

The student will read a selected journal article and write summary and reaction papers, each 500 words long, in current Turabian format, utilizing provided guidelines. 

Quizzes (8)

Each quiz will cover the Learn material for the assigned Module: Week. They will be open-book/open-notes, contain 20 multiple-choice questions and true/false questions, and have a one hour time limit.
