GICE 525 Survey of Islamic Theology and Practice

This course explores the historic rise and expansion of Islam. Basic Muslim beliefs and practices are identified and the diversity within the world of Islam is examined.

Islam has more global influence now than at any other time in history. An awareness of the basic history, teachings, and cultural influences of Islam is important regardless of one’s location in the world. This course seeks to increase the compassion and competency of the student as they build relationships and share Truth with followers of Islam in many different contexts.

Discussions (5)

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student will complete 5 Discussions in this course. The student will post one thread of at least 400 words. Then, the student must then post 2 replies of at least 200 words. For each thread, students must support his or her assertions with at least two scholarly citations in Turabian format. Each reply must incorporate at least two scholarly citations in Turabian format. Acceptable sources include the course textbooks, presentations, and other assigned readings, as well as outside scholarly sources and the Bible (the latter of which may be cited as often as is relevant, but only one citation will count toward the total of two or more in each post). Sura Review Assignment

The student will write a 1,500–2,000-word (6–8-page) reaction paper, analyzing 3 suras from the Qur’an, in current Turabian format, after reading A Christian Guide to the Qur’an. (CLO: C, D, E, F, G)

Research Paper: Outline and Thesis Statement Assignment

In a 1-page Microsoft Word document, the student will submit the topic, a thesis statement, and an outline for his/her research paper. (CLO: C)

Research Paper: Abstract and References Assignment

Building off of the Research Paper: Outline and Thesis Statement Assignment, the next step for the student is to submit an introduction, abstract, and a minimum of 6 scholarly resources. This will become the first page of the research paper and should be 250–300 words. The abstract will include an engaging introduction to the paper that shows the rationale for the paper and culminates in the thesis statement. Further, it will show how the student will work to accomplish the thesis. The student must also include a reference page, citing at least 6 scholarly sources in current Turabian format. (CLO: C)

Research Paper: Final Assignment

The student will write a 3,500–4,000-word (14–16-page) research paper in current Turabian format, choosing from a list of topics or consulting with the instructor for his/her own topics. (CLO: A, B, C, D, E, F, G)

Quizzes (3)

The student will take a a quiz covering the required reading for the 2 most recent modules. The quizzes will provide accountability for the assigned reading and require the student to recall basic, essential facts. Quizzes will be 25 questions, open-book/open-notes, and must be completed in 1 hour. (CLO: A, B, C, D, E, F, G)
