GEOG 520 Historical Geography

This course covers how geography has influenced history and the development of cultures, ideas, people groups, resources, and countries.

The purpose of this course is to provide the student with an overview of historical geography. The course highlights cultures, ideas, people groups, resources, religions, and technological innovations throughout recorded history. Historical knowledge, particularly as it relates to people groups, can assist with humanitarian and evangelistic efforts. 

After reading the Course Syllabus and Student Expectations, the student will complete the related checklist found in the Course Overview. 

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student will participate in 6 discussions by posting a thread in response to the provided prompt. Each thread must be at least 450 words and supported by at least 2 references. The student is encouraged to cite sources from .edu or .gov domains, journals, and/or books, wherever possible. The student is required to reply to 2 of his or her classmates’ threads. Each reply must be a minimum of 300 words. (CLOs: A, B, C, D, E)

For this assignment, the student will practice using artificial intelligence (AI) by utilizing 4 different types of queries to uncover historical geographic facts. The student will write a minimum of 600-words critiquing the exercise and describing the positives, negatives, surprises, and personal utility of the process. (CLOs: A, D)

The student will complete a historical geography research project paper. The paper will present information from the student’s research on a particular, non-U.S. area of historical significance. The paper must include a minimum of 3,000 words and at least 10 scholarly sources (primary sources must come from .edu or .gov domains, journals, or books). The paper must incorporate at least 10 key terms from the textbook. (CLOs: A, B, C, D, E)

The student will complete a historical geography research project PowerPoint. The PowerPoint will summarize the research project paper completed for the Historical Geography Project Assignment and include a minimum of 20 slides, at least 1 historical map, and an appropriate number of graphs, citations, and references.
