GEOG 371 Geographic Information Systems II

This course uses the US Department of Labor’s Geospatial Competency Model for equipping students in Data Acquisition and Management, Database Management, Cartographic Design, and Advanced Data Visualization.

To be marketable with geospatial skills, the student must possess mapping skills that meet a published standard. Many business, government, and environmental decisions require the analysis of data portrayed on maps. This course will teach the student to utilize data to generate maps for the purpose of analysis and presentation for decision makers.

Discussions (2)

The student is required to create a thread in response to the provided prompt for each discussion. Each thread must be at least 400 words and demonstrate course-related knowledge. In addition to the thread, the student is required to reply to 2 other classmates’ threads. Each reply must be at least 200 words. (CLOs 1, 2, & 5)

Practice Exercise Assignments (6)

Throughout this course, you will complete Practice Exercise Assignments. These assignments
will be accessed through the McGraw Hill platform. The homework is based on the material in
the text. In addition, McGraw Hill may be accessed outside of Canvas. The student will conduct a series of exercises using ArcGIS, corresponding to textbook chapters. Each exercise will involve answering approximately 10 questions, creating maps, and summarizing findings in written form. (CLOs 2, 3, 4, 5, & 6).

Quizzes (6)

Each quiz will cover the Learn materials for the modules in which it is assigned.  Each textbook chapter reading will have a corresponding 25 question quiz. Each quiz will be open-book/open-notes and have a one-hour time limit. (CLOs 2, 3, 4, & 5)
