Construction is the heart of the United States’ economy and the civil engineering profession. Wherever one travels, one sees construction of commercial and industrial buildings, infrastructure for civil projects, and housing for the general population. This course highlights special topics in the construction industry. This course develops the student’s knowledge base for applying standards and regulations applicable to construction projects and for using appropriate equipment and building materials, while maintaining project quality and safety. The student continues to develop the engineering analysis skills essential in civil engineering. The course includes both individual and team-based projects

Discussion

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences, Therefore the student will participate in one Discussion in this course and is encouraged to participate in the Discussion: Class Introductions. The student will respond to the prompt in at least 250 words and then submit two replies to peers’ threads, each of at least 150 words.

Construction Research Paper: Topic Submission Assignment

The student will submit the topic for the Construction Research Paper.

Construction Site Safety Violations Assignment

The student will review construction site photos and document the safety violations on a provided template.

Construction Research Paper: Abstract Assignment

The student will submit the abstract for the Construction Research Paper. The one-paragraph abstract should be 150-250 words and follow APA 7 formatting guidelines.

Erosion and Sediment Control Plan Group Project Assignment

Students will work in groups to design an appropriate erosion and sediment control plan. The ESC plan consists of two parts: a narrative section describing the project in paragraph form and an illustrative section that shows project development on map sheets.

Specification Writing Assignment

The student will write both a prescriptive and a performance specification for the Liberty University Concrete Canoe, based on the provided competition rules. 

CMU Design Assignment

The student will identify 5 examples of concrete masonry units in his/her community and provide a description and a photograph of each.

Guest Speaker and Site Visit Synopsis Assignment

The student will watch the provided videos and then write a 300-500-word essay detailing the speaker’s presentation and the lessons learned.

Construction Research Paper: First Draft Assignment

The student will submit the first draft of the Construction Research Paper. The first draft should include an abstract and references, and demonstrate that the student has begun making progress on the paper. While there is no required word count, the paper should include an abstract, research content from reliable sources, a reference page, and follow APA-7 formatting guidelines.

Homework: Excavator Capacity and Machine Power Assignment

The student will use the provided template to answer questions and complete calculation questions. 

Construction Research Paper: Final Draft Assignment

The student will submit the final draft of the Construction Research Paper, which has been developed throughout the course. The paper should be between 2,500 and 3,000 words, follow APA 7th edition formatting, and include scholarly sources.

Oracle Academy Agreement and Download Assignment

The student will download and sign the Oracle Academy agreement to use the Primavera P6 software. The student will also be provided with instructions on how to download the Primavera P6 software.
