Rationale
This course examines literary works within their historic and social context and within the context of universal values and concerns of the human experience. The focus is on those authors of great works who have been a continuing influence on literature and culture. This class also encourages each student to integrate their studies into a biblical worldview.

Discussions (6)
Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the discussions will ask students to read and discuss classic texts and to relate them to their historical context and to universal themes. For each discussion the student will write a 500 to 600 word answer to the given prompt; students will then give at least two replies of 100 to 200 words in length. (CLO: A, B, C, D)
Literary Analysis Essay Assignments (2)
Students will further develop their understanding of select reading assignments in a carefully written essay. (CLO: A, B, C, D)
Literary Analysis Essay: Paragraph and Outline Assignment
The student will write an introductory paragraph with a thesis statement of a 250 word minimum. The student will also develop an outline of a 150 word minimum.
Literary Analysis Essay: Final Draft Assignment
This essay should be at least 1400 words in length and include a title page and reference page.
Literary Research Analysis Assignments (2)
Students will use scholarly sources to develop a deeper understanding of a universal theme or a literary topic related to the course reading assignments. (CLO: A, B, C, D)
Literary Research Analysis: Paragraph and Outline Assignment
The student will write an introductory paragraph with a thesis statement for the Literary Research Analysis: Final Draft Assignment (250 word minimum). The student will also develop an outline with a 150 word minimum. The assignment will include a bibliography with at least seven scholarly or historically significant sources.
Literary Research Analysis: Final Draft Assignment
This paper should utilize at least six scholarly or historically significant sources and should have at least 2000 words, excluding the title page and reference page.
