Course Description

This course will provide an overview of the theories and practices in the management of meetings, conventions, and expositions. This will include the functions of meeting planning, sales, and the execution of the event, economic impacts, and connections to the hospitality industry.

Rationale

Business and association meetings, conferences, conventions, trade shows, expositions, and other similar gatherings make up a significant part of the hospitality and tourism industries. Their unique meeting purposes and venue requirements require specific planning – often involving multiple entities. Those who wish to work in hospitality management, tourism, destination marketing, event planning, or venue management, need to have an understanding of this unique industry segment.

Course Assignment

After reading the Course Syllabus and Student Expectations, the student will complete the related checklist found in the Course Overview.

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student is required to create a thread in response to the provided prompt for each discussion. Each thread must be at least 500 words, demonstrate course-related knowledge, and use at least 1 outside source. In addition to the thread, the student is required to reply to 1 other classmate’s thread. The reply must be at least 250 words. (A, B, E)

The student will complete a project divided into two parts. Planning for a fictional conference will include the selection of the site and appropriate lodging and meeting venues, creation of special activities, and conference scheduling. Projects must be presented as a Word document in 12-point Times New Roman font, double-spaced, with 1-inch margins. Projects must use current APA format for all in-text citations and the reference list. (A, B, C)

Each quiz will cover the Learn material for the assigned module: week. Each quiz will be open-book/open-notes, and have a 1.5-hour time limit. (A, B, D, E)
