EMER 350 Occupational Safety and Health for Emergency Services
Course Description
This course introduces the basic concepts of occupational health and safety as it relates to emergency service organizations. Topics include risk and hazard evaluation and control procedures for emergency service organizations.

Rationale
Accountability and responsibility are necessary to each individual in society. Incident Safety Officers must maintain a high level of integrity for the good of the order and the community they serve. Integrity of the individual is often measured and or articulated through accountability and responsibility as it related to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration standards.

Discussions (3)
Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student will complete 3 Discussions in this course. The student will post one thread of at least 300 words. He/she must then post 2 replies to his/her peers’ posts of at least 200 words. For each thread, the student must support his/her assertions with at least 2 scholarly citations in the current APA format. Each reply must incorporate at least 1 scholarly citation in the current APA format. Any sources cited must have been published within the last five years. Acceptable sources include professional journals, scholarly works, and the textbook, in addition to the Bible. For peer posts, each reply must be positive and substantial in nature and not just repeat what the peer has submitted in his/her post.
Case Study Assignment
Using the assigned scenario, the student will compose a case study of the scenario, analyzing the key lessons learned from the situation and proposed remedies. The assignment should be in APA format with a length of 3 – 4 double-spaced pages of content. This assignment should include at least 5 sources.
National Fire Protection Association Assignment
In this paper, the student will select an NFPA guideline that best aligns with the daily operations of his/her department. From the selection of NFPA 1500, 1521, 1561, 1581, 1581, 1710, or 1720, the student will select the standard that has affected his/her department the most over the last three years.
The assignment must be completed through the lens of a Biblical Worldview where the student will incorporate appropriate biblical passages and/or resources. The paper must be completed in current APA formatting and consist of at least 1500 words of text (excluding all title and reference pages). No abstract is required. In addition to the Bible and the course text, all papers must utilize at least 5 current (published within the last five years) outside scholarly sources to support evaluation and analysis.
Identifying Statistical Injury Assignment
In this paper, the student will review the common injuries that have been reported in the last three fiscal cycles within his/her organization and report on mitigation tactics that can reduce or mitigate the frequency of this type of injury. The student will conclude his/her paper with personal perspective on how individual and team awareness can control this type of incident from happening in the future.

Atypical Stress Event Assignment
Responders were once expected to handle these events on their own and were often criticized as being “weak” if they displayed emotion about these events. Fortunately, the stigma attached to mental health issues is going away, and responders are encouraged to seek assistance more often.
In this paper, the student will select one of the above incidents that have been reported in the last three fiscal cycles within his/her organization or a neighboring jurisdiction and report on how it affected the emergency service community. The student will conclude his/her paper with personal perspective on how department awareness can control this type of stress may be mitigated when it occurs in the future.

Near Miss Reporting Assignment
In this paper, the student will explore the Near Miss and Firefighter Close Calls websites and provide his/her overall analysis of the benefits of the two sites. The student will conclude his/her paper with personal perspective on one of the identified sites and explain how this can be used in the student’s organization to heighten awareness for his/her personnel.

Each module quiz will cover the Learn for the assigned Module: Week. Each exam will be open-book/open-notes, contain 10 multiple-choice questions, and have a 30-minute time limit and 45 minutes on dual chapter read modules.
