Under the direction of a dissertation chair, the doctoral candidate writes a dissertation proposal in alignment with the most current Dissertation Handbook. The development of the proposal is in preparation for the dissertation proposal defense, which is the culminating assignment for this course.


After reading the Course Syllabus and Student Expectations, the candidate will complete the related checklist found in the Course Overview.

Doctoral Research Dissertation Tasks (6)

For each Task required in this course, the candidate must review the information concerning the task in the Doctoral Programs Dissertation Handbook located in the SOE Doctoral Community. After the candidate has completed the task according to the task’s requirements, they will submit it to the corresponding assignment in Canvas. After the task is submitted, the faculty member will review the completed task and provide feedback. The candidate must resubmit their task assignments with revisions until the faculty member approves them.

  • Task 5: Proposal Defense Presentation Assignment

  • Task 7a: Data Collection Assignment
  • Task 7b: Submission of Data Collection Evidence Assignment
  • Task 8a: Chapter 4 Chair Approval Assignment
  • Task 8b: Chapter 4 Committee Approval Assignment

The candidate is responsible for planning ahead for the tasks in this course so that the pace or rate of progression required in this course can be maintained. Although the submission links for the tasks are provided in their assigned modules, the candidate is permitted to complete them in succession prior to their assigned due dates and as they and the mentoring chair arrange. In Modules 5 and 10, the candidate and mentoring chair will collaboratively evaluate the candidate’s progress in the course thus far so that the time needed for the remaining tasks in the candidate’s doctoral journey can be forecasted.
