Course Description

A study of administrative and leadership aspects of student affairs.

Rationale

Higher education leadership has become progressively more complex in the post-recession era, requiring administrators to develop robust strategies to meet the ever increasing demands placed on modern student affairs divisions. It is critical for leaders to analyze and evaluate the factors that influence effectiveness in this key institutional division. This course examines current trends and research in student affairs leadership and administration, with an emphasis on the strategy and execution of key functions.

Course Assignment

After reading the Course Syllabus and Student Expectations, the candidate will complete the related checklist found in the Course Overview.

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the candidate is required to create a thread in response to the provided prompt for each discussion. Each thread must be 400 words, include at least two scholarly citations in APA format, and demonstrate course-related knowledge. In addition to the thread, the student is required to reply to 2 other classmates’ threads. Each reply must be 200 words and incorporate at least one scholarly citation. (CLO: A, B, C, D)

The candidate will evaluate a student affairs planning scenario requiring financial analysis and strategic planning. The resulting proposal will require full justification and scholarly support for each decision point. A minimum of two scholarly sources, including the textbook, must be used. (CLO: A, D)

The candidate will create a concise, annotated timeline presentation outlining the key events, theoretical shifts, and law and policy considerations in post-secondary student affairs practice from the 1940’s to the modern era. Emphasis will be placed on developments that specifically impacted governance, theory and practice as noted in the textbook and targeted readings. The presentation must contain a minimum of 10 major events with support from at least 5 scholarly sources. All citations and references must be in current APA format. (CLO: D, E)

The candidate will write an 8-page literature review in current APA format that focuses on a topic of interest within Student Affairs. The paper must include at least 10 references in addition to the course textbooks. (CLO: D, E)

The candidate will choose one leader from the Bible and construct a profile of the characteristics that defined the individual’s leadership. The paper must be a minimum of five pages in current APA format and include 5 disparate biblical references that discuss leadership and/or wisdom. (CLO: B, C, D)

The candidate will conceptualize and develop a comprehensive Student Affairs initiative to include specific financial, communication, and implementation strategies. A minimum of 5 sources in current APA format will be required, and emphasis will be placed on the synthesis of theory and practice. (CLO: A, C, F)
