EDUC 334 Human Development and Learning for Educators

This course explores the physical, social, emotional, speech and language, and intellectual development of children. Its focus is on the individualized instruction and approaches needed to address differences in children (such as socio-economic status, cognitive challenges, etc.) and life experiences and family structures that may affect learning or student achievement (substance abuse, trauma, child abuse and neglect, and other family disruptions).

This course provides educators with a background on human development, learning theory, and diverse social environments that may affect student success in the classroom. The focus of this course includes child development along with life experiences, family structure, and the impact of trauma in the classroom.

Discussions (2)

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student is required to provide a thread in response to the provided prompt for each Discussion. Each thread must be 250 words and demonstrate course-related knowledge. For each thread, the student must support his/her assertions with at least one scholarly citation and one scriptural reference in APA format. Any scholarly resource cited must have been published within the last five years. Acceptable sources include the course textbooks and scholarly articles from scholarly journals. In addition to the thread, the student is required to reply to 2 other classmates’ threads. Each reply must be a minimum of 100 words. (CLO: A, B, C, D, E)

Annotated Bibliography Assignment

The student will complete one annotated bibliography in current APA format that will serve as the research foundation of his/her Literature Review Assignment. The annotated bibliography must include at least five scholarly sources. The sources must be directly related to a developmental disability and at least three of these sources must be current and published within the last five years. Each annotation should be 100-150 words, include a summary of the main points in the reference, and explain how the information will be beneficial to the Literature Review Assignment.

Literature Review Assignment

The student will construct a research-based paper in current APA format that focuses on human development. The paper must include at least 5 references in addition to the course textbook and the Bible. The candidate will write a 1,000-1,500-word paper that reflects upon the skills needed to understand developmental disabilities and issues related to low socioeconomic status, attention deficit disorders, developmental disorders, and gifted education. The candidate must integrate a theory and create interventions to improve the learning environment. (CLO: C).

Reflective Journal Assignment

The student will write a 3-page research-based reflective journal that will compare and contrast instructional methods that can meet the needs of diverse learners. This journal should be in APA format and include a minimum of 3 sources. Acceptable sources include scholarly books and articles, the course textbook, and the Bible. This journal will address aspects related the development of children (physical, social, emotional, speech and language, and intellectual) and how classroom management can play an important role in human development. Data Analysis Assignment

The student will conduct a review of latest statistics related to child abuse, substance abuse, neglect, adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), and family disruptions from their current state or country. The student will write a 1,000-1,500-word analysis after a comprehensive review of the data. The paper must be in current APA format and include at least 3 references in addition to the course textbook and the Bible. The paper will identify the greatest areas of concern and strategies to facilitate a trauma-informed classroom. (CLO: E).

Trauma-Informed Practices PowerPoint Presentation Assignment

The candidate will construct a 10-15 slide PowerPoint Presentation that completes an investigation on trauma informed practices in the classroom. The candidate will identify at least four different strategies and describe how each practice will positively impact a student who had a particular adverse childhood experience(s) (ACEs). The PowerPoint must include at least ten sources in APA format and must include a Biblical worldview. (CLO: B, D, E)

K-12 Educator Interview Assignment

The student will interview a current K-12 educator on best practices related to appropriate interactions with children with diverse needs including economic, social, racial, ethnic, religious, physical, and cognitive. The 20-question interview will explore an educator’s role through the lens of a culturally responsive classroom. Following the interview, the student will transcribe the findings and complete a summary in APA format. The summary must include at least 5 references in addition to the course textbook and the Bible. (CLO: D)

Each quiz will cover the Learn material for the assigned Module(s): Week(s). Each quiz will be open-book/open-notes, contain 20 multiple-choice and true/false questions, allow 1 attempt, and have a 1-hour time limit. (CLO:  A, C, D)
