Course Description

A systematic approach to classroom teaching which addresses the cyclical nature of planning, instruction, and assessment. Each teacher candidate will prepare lessons which follow the Liberty University model. Topics include the instructional process, culturally responsive teaching, differentiation, technology integration, classroom management, and learner-focused strategies for engagement and impact on student academic progress.

Rationale

Within the field of education, instructional design has been found to be critical to the impact on student academic progress.

The purpose of instructional design is to expose the candidate to the responsibility the professional has for:

  • Designing of engaging instruction.
  • Planning for classroom management through positive instructional preparation.
  • Researching for available resources for implementing instruction.
  • Providing differentiated instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners in grades preK-8, including students with exceptionalities, differences in language, and/or SES.

To comply with the aims of the University, this course will focus on the following:

  • Enable the candidate to engage in a major field of study in career-focused disciplines built on a solid foundation in the liberal arts.
  • Encourage a commitment to the Christian life, one of personal integrity, sensitivity to the needs of others, social responsibility and active communication of the Christian faith, and, as it is lived out, a life that leads people to Jesus Christ as the Lord of the universe and their own personal Savior.

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the candidate is required to provide a thread in response to the provided prompt. Each thread must be 300 words and demonstrate course-related knowledge. In addition to the thread, the candidate is required to reply to 2 other classmates’ threads. Each reply must be 100 words. Standards Assignment

The candidate will use the template provided to compile a document including state, national, and InTASC standards, according to to his or her specific content/endorsement area. (CLO: B)

Context for Learning Assignment

The candidate will complete the Context for Learning portion of edTPA to demonstrate knowledge of the practicum classroom. The submission will include an understanding of the diverse needs of the students the candidate is working with throughout the practicum. (CLO: B)

Instructional Materials and Assessments Assignment

The candidate will gather all instructional materials and assessments needed for the three lesson plans written in the course. (CLO: B, C, D)

edTPA Task 1 Research Assignment

The candidate will select and incorporate research into the edTPA portfolio. (CLO: A, B)

edTPA Planning Commentary Assignments (2)

The candidate will use the edTPA Planning Commentary Template to reflect on the planning process. (CLO: A, B)

First Lesson Plan Assignments (2)

Part 1: The candidate will complete Part 1 of the lesson plan template including Grade, Subject, Standards, Objective, Instruction, and Assessment. (CLO: A, B, C, D)

Part 2: The candidate will complete Part 2 of the lesson plan template including Materials, Technology, Differentiation, Academic Language, and Research. (CLO: A, B, C, D)

Second and Third Lesson Plan Assignment

The candidate will write two additional lesson plans that follow the first lesson plan completed to represent a learning segment. (CLO: A, B, C, D,)

Livetext: edTPA Task 1 Assignment

The candidate will use the Pre-edTPA Resources folder in LiveText to gather all documents for edTPA Task 1. These assignments will be completed throughout the course and scored based on the edTPA Rubrics for Task 1. (CLO: A, B, C, D)

Quiz: edTPA Overview

The candidate will take a quiz covering knowledge of edTPA based on the edTPA Overview video. This quiz will be open-book/open-notes, contain 10 multiple-choice questions, will allow one attempt, and will have a 1-hour time limit. (CLO: A)

Quiz: Lesson Planning

The candidate will take a quiz based on the lesson plans submitted for the course. This quiz will be open-book/open-notes, contain 10 multiple-choice and true/false questions, will allow one attempt, and will have a 1 hour time limit. (CLO: B, C)

Quizzes (8)

Each quiz will cover the textbook readings from the respective module: week. Each quiz will be open-book/open-notes, contain 25 true/false and multiple-choice questions, will allow for two attempts, and will have a 90-minute time limit. (CLO: A, B, C, D)
