EDST 793 Student Teaching Distance – Own Classroom

Student teaching offers practice in all phases of teacher responsibility. This practice includes teaching activities in a PreK-12 classroom setting appropriate to the endorsement area of the teacher candidate.

Student teaching is the culmination of all of the candidate’s course work for preparation for teaching. It is essential to provide an opportunity to communicate with university supervisors.

Discussions (2)

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the candidate is required to provide a thread in response to the provided prompt for each discussion. Each thread must be 200 words and demonstrate course-related knowledge through at least two citations from the required reading and/or presentation sources. In addition to the thread, the candidate is required to reply to 2 classmates’ threads. Each reply must be 100 words and include at least one citation from the reading or presentation sources. Placement Verification Assignment

The Student Teaching in Your Own Classroom Form must be completed after the first day of the placement providing the information requested regarding the placement location and on-site mentor information. This information must be consistent with the information provided by the Field Office. The candidate will let the instructor know if there are any discrepancies.

Journal Entry and Weekly Log Assignments (9)

The candidate will submit a 2- to 3-paragraph journal entry summarizing the week at school. The candidate’s entries should reflect personal experiences about what was learned and what challenges were faced while also responding to a prompt. Weekly hours will be logged and also recorded in LiveText. During select weeks, the FEM will be checked for the recording of hours. The candidate must input his/her direct and indirect hours in the “View Placement Details” in the FEM; the onsite mentor must then approve those hours. (CLO: B)

Implementation Schedule Assignment

The candidate will work with the Cooperating Teacher to create a schedule to phase into and out of the classroom over the entire placement. (CLO: E)

Lesson Plan Assignments (5)

The candidate will submit lesson plans each Friday prior to the week the lessons are to be taught. The lesson plans for the first 5 lessons taught will be written as detailed lesson plans. After completing the 5 detailed lesson plans with approval from the Course Instructor, the candidate can use block lesson plans for the subsequent lessons. The differences between completing the 2 kinds and further guidelines are outlined in the course. (CLO: C, D, E)

Initial Visit and Confidentiality Agreement Assignment

The Initial Visit form is located in the Student Teacher Handbook in Canvas. The candidate, On-Site Mentor, and University Supervisor will obtain this form from and complete it during the candidate’s first visit to the school. (CLO: A)

Field Experience Summary Check Assignment

The candidate will submit his/her Field Experience Summary (FES) form for review. If an area has not been completed, the candidate will need to make arrangements to complete any missing field experiences. (CLO: D)

On-Site Mentor Observation Assignments (2)

The On-Site Mentor will complete the observation form provided in the Student Teaching Handbook for two formal lessons the candidate teaches during the placement, for a total of two observations. (CLO: C, D, E)

Mid-Term CPAST Assignment

The candidate’s On-Site Mentor will complete this assessment through the FEM in LiveText. The consensus score report should be submitted by the candidate in the course. (CLO: A, C, D, E)

Virtual Lesson Plan Assignment

The candidate will submit a detailed plan for use in online and hybrid settings. The lesson must include measurable objectives, research-based instructional strategies, engaging materials, and an appropriate assessment to evaluate student progress toward the objective. The student will also write a reflection of the virtual lesson for a future Journal and Weekly Log Assignment. (CLO: C, D, E)

Video Lesson Assignment

In order for the course instructor to be able to observe and evaluate the candidate’s teaching, the candidate will need to make arrangements to have one of his/her lessons videotaped. The candidate will then submit the recorded lesson in LiveText. The recorded lesson must be 30 minutes or less and include the entire lesson, from beginning to end. The student will also submit a copy of the detailed lesson plan along with a self-reflection of the lesson. (CLO: C, D, E)

Field Experience Assessment Assignment

The Field Experience Assessment is completed in two parts in LiveText. The completed FES form should be submitted for review and a reflection regarding these experiences should also be included. This assignment must be submitted in LiveText. Failure to complete all areas on the FES form will impact the final course grade and will hinder the candidate from proceeding to Gate 4. Portfolio Assignment

The candidate will complete the Portfolio he/she has been working on throughout the program and will submit it to both LiveText and to the course. (CLO: C, D, E)

P-12 Survey Assignment

The P-12 Survey Assignment is a way for the candidate to receive feedback from students about their perceptions of the candidate’s instruction and effectiveness as a teacher. The assignment should be completed in LiveText near the end of his/her student teaching placement. 

Final CPAST Assignment

The candidate’s On-Site Mentor and University Supervisor will complete this assessment through the FEM section of LiveText. The consensus score report should be submitted by the candidate in the course. (CLO: A, C, D, E)

Quiz: Placement Attendance

The candidate will complete the Attendance Quiz by answering questions regarding attendance for the student teaching placement. This quiz will cover the Learn material for the assigned module. This quiz will be open-book/open-notes, contain 10 true/false questions, and have a 1-hour and 45-minute time limit

Quiz: Program Completer Contact Survey

The candidate will complete a quiz after submitting a survey providing the School of Education information to continue contact after graduation. This quiz will cover the Learn material for the assigned module. This quiz will be open-book/open-notes, contain 1 multiple-choice question and have a 1-hour time limit.
