EDRS 650 School Based Literacy Leadership

An investigation of research-based intervention for reading program. The role of the reading specialist to the total school program is also examined. Field experience required.

Leadership in literacy is vital in every school. The focus of this course is to develop reading specialists who lead the way through demonstrating multiple leadership roles and guiding stakeholders to ensure all students will reach their potential in literacy development.

Discussions (3)

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the candidate will participate in three Discussions. Each thread must be 400 words and include 1 scholarly citation in APA format, and the 2 replies must be at least 150 words each and include 1 scholarly citation in APA format. Case Study Assignments (3)

The candidate will complete 3 case studies each in current APA format applying roles of a reading specialist. Each case study must align with specified reading assignments. The submission must be at least five pages in length and reference the correlating textbook readings and at least two other readings from the Learn section of the module. (CLO: A, B, C, D, E, F, G)

Project Assignments (4)

There are four projects to complete, one for each specified reading assignment. Each project must include a practical application that could be used in the role of a reading specialist.  For each project, the student will also compose a brief introductory paper. All elements of the paper must adhere to current APA formatting guidelines. (CLO: A, B, C, E, F)

Field Experience Assignments (3)

Field Experience Plan Form Assignment

The candidate will create a plan for interviewing two different reading specialists. Each placement will be five hours in length and includes an interview, observation, and curriculum analysis. The plan will identify all of the information of the field placement. (CLO: G)

Field Experience: Interview and Curriculum Analysis Assignments (2)

The candidate will conduct an interview using the provided questions for two different reading specialists. The candidate will also analyze the curriculum used by the reading specialist at each placement. A full analysis of the two interviews will be a part of the final Synthesis Essay Assignment. (CLO: A, B, C, D, G)

Synthesis Essay: Roles of a Reading Specialist Assignment

The candidate will write an 8-10 page essay on the roles of a reading specialist. This paper must follow current APA format and include the class text, the ILA Standards, and five other references. (CLO: A, B, C, D, E, F, G)

Quiz: Course Overview

A short quiz is presented to establish the expectations of this course. A list of overview questions will be provided. This quiz will be open-book/open-notes, contain 10 multiple-choice and essay questions, have no time limit, and allow 1 attempt. (CLO: G)
