EDLC 543 Human Development and Learning for Educators of Children and Adolescents

This course explores the holistic development of children, encompassing physical, social, emotional, speech and language, and intellectual aspects. It emphasizes personalized instruction and strategies to accommodate variations among children, including differences in socio-economic status, cognitive abilities, and life experiences. Additionally, it considers family dynamics that might impact learning or student achievement, such as substance abuse, trauma, child abuse, neglect, and other disruptions.

Discussions (2)

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student is required to provide a thread in response to the provided prompt for each Discussion. Each thread must be 400 words and demonstrate course-related knowledge. In addition to the thread, the student is required to reply to 2 other classmates’ threads. Each reply must be a minimum of 200 words. (CLO: A, B, C, D, E)

Annotated Bibliography Assignment

The student will complete one annotated bibliography that will serve as the research foundation of the literature review. The student will explore five different developmental disabilities of his/her choice for this assignment. The annotated bibliography must follow the current APA format and consist of at least five scholarly sources. Each annotation should be 150 – 200 words.

Literature Review Assignment

The student will construct a research-based paper in current APA format that focuses on human development. The paper must include at least ten reference(s) in addition to the course textbook and the Bible. The candidate will write a 2,000-2,500- word paper that reflects upon the skills needed to understand  developmental disabilities and issues related to low socioeconomic status; attention deficit disorders; developmental disorders; and gifted education. The candidate must integrate a theory and create interventions to improve the learning environment. (CLO: C).

Reflective Journal Assignment

The student will write a 4-page research-based reflective journal that will compare and contrast instructional methods that can meet the needs of diverse learners.  This journal will address aspects related the development of children (physical, social, emotional, speech and language, and intellectual) and how classroom management can play an important role in human development. (CLO: A, C, D).

Data Analysis Assignment

The student will conduct a review of latest statistics related to child abuse, substance abuse, neglect, adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and family disruptions from their current state or country.  The student will write a 2,000-2,500 word analysis after a comprehensive review of the data.  The paper must be in current APA format and include at least 5 references in addition to the course textbook and the Bible.  The paper will identify the greatest areas of concern and strategies to facilitate a trauma-informed classroom.  (CLO: E).

Trauma-Informed Practices PowerPoint Presentation Assignment

The candidate will construct a 15-20 slide PowerPoint Presentation that completes an investigation on trauma informed practices in the classroom. The candidate will identify at least five different strategies and describe how each practice will positively impact a student who had a particular adverse childhood experience(s). (ACEs). The PowerPoint must include at least ten sources and must include a and must include a Biblical worldview. (CLO: B, D, E)

K-12 Educator Interview Assignment

The student will interview a current K-12 educator on best practices related to appropriate interactions with children with diverse needs including economic, social, racial, ethnic, religious, physical and cognitive.  The 20 question interview will explore an educator’s role through the lens of a culturally responsive classroom.  Following the interview the student will transcribe the findings and complete a summary. The summary must include at least 5 reference(s) in addition to the course textbook and the Bible. (CLO: D).

Each quiz will cover the Learn material for the assigned module(s): week(s). Each quiz will be open-book/open-notes, contain 20 multiple-choice, true/false, short answer, etc. questions, and have a 2 hour time limit. (MLO:  A, C, D)
