This course examines the theories related to group counseling and their application to group work. Students will learn the types of group work, basic group leader skills, group processes and procedures.

Therefore, knowledge of group theory and the development of group leadership skills are essential to becoming more effective practitioners in either setting.

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student is required to create a thread in response to the provided prompt for each discussion, and he or she will also respond to at least 2 other classmates’ posts. The thread should be at least 400 words. The thread must demonstrate course-related knowledge and be supported by at least 2 scholarly citations in current APA format. This assignment offers the opportunity to develop a comprehensive psychoeducational group plan, which will be utilized throughout this course. The topic selected for the psychoeducational group will form the foundation for subsequent projects. Therefore, it is crucial to choose a topic that reflects both contemporary relevance and alignment with professional practice. This assignment must be 3-5 pages in length. Current APA style must be used for the reference section. (CLO: A, B, C, D).

The Reflective Essay Assignment will require the student to apply group theory concepts to real group scenarios, reflect on the dynamics, roles, and challenges faced in the group, and analyze his or her experiences through a theoretical lens. Additionally, the student will evaluate his or her professional dispositions in the context of group work. This reflection essay should be 3-4 pages and should not exceed four pages in length. The essay should adhere to current APA format. (CLO: B, C)

The Psychoeducational Group Presentation Assignment is an extension of the student’s Psychoeducational Group Plan Assignment. For this assignment, the student will develop the introductory material for the Psychoeducational Group Plan Assignment of the student’s psychoeducational group. This material will reflect a well-organized plan grounded in scholarly literature and aligned with best practices in psychoeducation. The session flow and content will be determined by the student and based on the type of group and leadership style the student deploys. This presentation should be 10-15 slides of content in APA formatting, with a title slide and reference slides. (CLO: B, C, D)

This assignment offers an opportunity to the student to transition from a psychoeducational group to a psychotherapy group focus. The task is to create a recruitment flyer for the student’s psychotherapy group, aimed at attracting appropriate participants. This flyer should reflect a professional tone, clear communication, and adherence to ethical considerations in group therapy recruitment. (CLO: A, B, C, D, E)

This assignment will help prepare for the Psychotherapy Group Plan Assignment by gathering and evaluating scholarly research. An annotated bibliography allows the student to critically assess relevant sources and develop a solid foundation for his or her group plan. By completing this assignment, the student will identify key themes and studies that will inform his or her understanding of group psychotherapy and best practices in the field. The student’s task is to create an annotated bibliography of at least seven scholarly, peer reviewed journal articles (books should not be used) published within the last three years. These sources should directly relate to the student’s selected psychotherapy group topic and reflect the current research on group psychotherapy practices, theories, and interventions. This assignment provides the student with the opportunity to extend the topic he or she selected in the Psychoeducational Group Plan Assignment by creating a comprehensive psychotherapy group plan. The plan will clearly differentiate this group from the previously developed psychoeducational group and be grounded in scholarly research and best practices in group psychotherapy. The paper should be 8-10 pages, written in APA formatting, and include 7 scholarly references. Please note, the student is expected to use headings throughout the paper to help organize the content.
