CMUS 429 Sound Reinforcement II

This course is designed to advance the student utilizing the skills and knowledge gained in the Fundamentals of Sound Reinforcement (CMUS 329) course. Students will gain deeper training in mixing different kinds of concerts, adapting to various venues while on tour, and working with varied groups and live sound situations as an in-house engineer. Practical mixing instruction will provide repeatable workflows for working in a variety of contexts.

Churches need capable audio technicians for their gatherings, now more than ever. Additionally, the light of Christ is dramatically underrepresented in the live event industry. This course seeks to give students the tools they need to serve in both arenas with excellence for the sake of the Kingdom. Practical application is heavily favored in this course, building upon the foundational knowledge established in the prerequisites, and allowing them to step into any environment quickly to make a positive impact.

Discussions (2)

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student is required to provide a thread in response to the provided prompt for each discussion. Each thread must be 500 words and demonstrate course-related knowledge. In addition to the thread, the student is required to reply to 2 other classmates’ threads. Each reply must be a minimum of 200 words.

The student will prepare a show file for a Yamaha digital console using the provided documentation, and following instructor directions as he/she does so.

The student will prepare an additional show file, but on a digital console platform that is directly applicable to his/her context.

The student will prepare a sound system design based on principles discussed in class. The student will provide documentation of this system in various formats, including the use of acoustic prediction software.

The student will provide a plan for distributing power to all of the various components in a real-world sound reinforcement system. The student will provide documentation of this plan using a provided template.

Each quiz will cover the Learn material for the assigned module(s): week(s). Each quiz will be open-book/open-notes, contain up to 25 multiple-choice, true/false, matching, ordering, and/or short answer questions, and have a 1-hour time limit.
