CMUS 334 Commercial Music Technology II: DAW Applications

This course is the investigation of computer applications for a variety of commercial musical purposes, including the following: use of multi-track music recording software; sequencing, using loops; integrating MIDI and digital audio; digital audio data capture and editing; and sound shaping.

Audio has tremendous ability to carry meaningful messages. From podcasts, to recording live bands, to capturing demos of original songs, the ability to record and edit audio is a tremendous asset to anyone in the recording or live production field. In addition, the ability to record and edit MIDI provides the ability to capture and create almost anything. Using software such as Ableton Live allows the student to perform his/her audio and MIDI recordings live on stage.

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student will post one thread of at least 300 words and then post 2 replies of at least 100 words. For each thread, the student must support his/her assertions. If, by chance, the student is utilizing a resource, the source(s) must be cited. Any sources cited must have been published within the last five years. Acceptable sources include YouTube tutorials, Online Articles, or the Ableton Live manual.

The student will complete tutorials within Ableton live and upload a screen shot of completion for submission on the learning management system.

The application of learning in this course is recording a cover song in Ableton Live. The foundation of this assignment is selecting a song to record audio and MIDI. This is a process that the student will do many times in his or her professional career. From recording scratch tracks, or demo songs for song writing, to recording a live band, or band in the studio, to recording and editing a podcast, the ability to record and edit audio and MIDI is an incredibly valuable skill to any professional musician or audio professional. This is a 6-part project, with each module building upon one another.

The student will demonstrate his or her ability to render and export stems out of Ableton Live and drag them into another Ableton Live session in preparation for live performance.

This quiz will cover the Ableton Built in Live Tour watch item. The quiz will be open-book/open-notes, contain 10 multiple-choice questions, and have a 30-minute time limit.
