CLCM 600 Organizing a Faith-Based Humanitarian Response

This course examines a theoretical and practical application of disaster response activities through faith-based organizations. The course will highlight the unique role of churches and faith-based organizations in humanitarian action. The course will include Sphere certification.

The purpose of this course is to examine the key principles and concepts involving humanitarian action. Understanding core emergency management principles is essential to mitigating, planning for, responding to, and recovering from disasters.

Discussions (2)

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student is required to provide a thread in response to the provided prompt. The thread must be at least 400 words and demonstrate course-related knowledge. In addition to the thread, the student is required to reply to 2 other classmates’ threads. Each reply must be at least 200 words. The student is required to provide proper citations to support the discussion thread and reply. (CLO: D)

Portfolio Project Assignments (5)

The student will submit five Portfolio Projects. The first four Portfolio Projects will apply learning from the technical chapters of the Sphere standards using a provided emergency scenario. Each of the first four Portfolio Projects assignments will be 1200 to 2400 words and require a minimum of 8 citations from course and scholarly materials. The last Portfolio Project will require the student to create a camp map using the Sphere standards. The five Portfolio Project assignments will provide an opportunity for the student to see the multiple facets of a complex emergency response. (CLO: A, B, C)

Quiz Certifications (2)

The Sphere and FEMA certifications provide the student the opportunities to learn industry standards in both US and global emergency response. The Sphere in Practice certification is the most recognized standard in global humanitarian response. By completing the FEMA certifications, the student will be exposed to the uniqueness of US-based incident management and support activities. Additionally, this course will provide an overview of FEMA; introduce basic emergency management concepts; and provide a high-level look at how FEMA meets its mission. These quizzes will cover the Learn material for the assigned module: week. These quizzes will be open-book/open-notes, contain 1 file upload question, and will have a 30-minute time limit. (CLO: A, B, C, D)
